  • Centro: Monterrey’s busy and expansive downtown includes the Macroplaza, Parque Fundidora, Museo del Obispado, and the pedestrianized street of Calle de Morelo which is lined with shops and souvenir stalls.   • Grutas de Garcia: Hike or take a speedy cable car to the top of a mountain to the entrance of Grutas de Garcia, a network of caves with huge 50-million-year-old stalagmites and stalactites. The tour is well-guided and the loop inside is about a mile, including several flights of stairs. It is an hour north of Monterrey in the Sierra El Fraile y San Miguel natural reserve.
  • Cascada Cola de Caballo : Forty-five minutes south of downtown Monterrey in the town of Santiago is Cascada Cola de Caballo, a short hike with a footbridge to a waterfall called “Horse Tail” because of the way the water fans out from a central point as it cascades down the rocks. Stop and have a meal at one of the restaurants along the lake in Santiago on your way back to Monterrey.

  • Cerro de la Silla: Cerro de la Silla, or “Saddleback Mountain” stands out among Monterrey’s mountains for its distinctive serrated peak. Climb to the top for a gorgeous view across the city that is wonderful both day and night. It is about one hour up to the viewpoint and roughly a four hour hike to the top.
  • Macroplaza / Gran Plaza: The largest city square in the world, known as Macroplaza or Gran Plaza, is a group of connected smaller squares and parks as wide as a full city block. The area includes fountains, gardens, sculptures, monuments, and is lined with museums and government buildings. At the southern end of the plaza, the 200-foot Faro del Comercio shoots bright green lasers into the night sky. There are many restaurants and department stores within walking distance of the plaza as well.
  • Fundidora Park: What was once an industrial park that became a wasteland is now Fundidora Park, a large urban park with amenities such as a pond, amusement park, arena, concert auditorium, bike rental shop, cafes, a maze of walking paths, and playgrounds. Paseo Santa Lucia is a one and a half mile manmade riverwalk that connects from Paseo Santa Lucia Estacion Fundidora to Macroplaza, which also passes the Baseball Hall of Fame on the way.
  • Parque Ecológico Chipinque: Parque Ecológico Chipinque is a mountainous nature reserve a few miles south of the city that’s great for hiking and mountain biking, with 30 miles of trails. Bikes can be rented onsite and taxis can be taken from the city proper.

Monterrey is cosmopolitan, diverse, and industrious, with a population around four and a half million people. It is known as the commercial hub of the northern half of the country. It is also considered to be one of the most livable cities in Mexico; after a 2018 study found that the suburb of San Pedro Garza García offers the best quality of life in the whole country. Monterrey sits in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains, which provide a calming backdrop to the towering and sprawling skyline.
