Applethwaite Cottage, Cosy, Log Burner, WiFi, 15 Minute Walk to Lakeside,
About this cottage rental
Nestled in Windermere, this attractive cottage for R 4,071 per night is a great choice for your next break. Sympathetically restored, Applethwaite Cottage is a Grade 2 listed traditional 170 year old Cumbrian stone cottage situated down a short driveway just off the High Street. The cottage is ideally located with all the amenities and hustle and bustle of Windermere a moment away allowing you to enjoy all the delights and experiences the Lake District has to offer. At the top of Windermere, Applethwaite Cottage is just a 1-2 minutes' stroll away from the traditional pubs, wine bars, cafes, restaurants and amenities in Windermere. We are only a couple of minutes walk from Windermere railway station, which is the end of the line, but from where trains can be caught to Staveley (try the Brewery or Wilfs Café), Lancaster, Manchester Airport, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and beyond. The Lake District tourist buses are a brilliant way of getting around the Lakes and the bus stop is at the railway station so it's ideal for catching the bus to Ambleside, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Coniston etc. A hop on and off day ticket allows you to stop at different stops throughout the day, so don’t worry if you don’t have a car. As one of our guests wrote in our visitor book “just walk”! Applethwaite is a one minute walk to the centre of Windermere so shops, banks, cafes, restaurants are all close to hand. We are also just a minute's walk to the start of Orrest Head Walk - one of Wainwright's walks and one of Windermere's best vantage points. A 20 minute walk up Orrest Head reveals stunning views across the fells, roof tops of Windermere and onto the Lake itself and on a clear day offering views to Scarfell, Helvelyn and to Morecambe Bay. The walk has recently been made more wheelchair/buggy friendly so it's a perfect view point. Alternatively walk through Windermere and take a right down to the quieter Lakeside and enjoy the view walking around Queen Adelaide’s Hill. If you’ve brought your own kayak or paddle board then this is an ideal spot away from the busy piers in Bowness to launch (car parking is available at the Rayrigg Meadow car park). Alternatively walk down the hill to Bowness to the 3 screen cinema, Beatrix Potter World, shops, cafes and bars and enjoy boating on the Lake; catch the ferry over to Brockholes and Go Ape, Ambleside or the foot/car ferry over to Claife Heights, Wray Castle or carry on driving to Hawkshead or Coniston. And with the Dales Way only a stroll away there are lots of great walks on the doorstep. Applethwaite Cottage is approximately 170 years old and is the first cottage of a row of only four Grade 2 listed cottages, and offers a cosy, traditional, homely feel with modern facilities. Tucked down a driveway and behind a gated fence Applethwaite has an open front pebbled garden area with a table and chairs, ideal for catching the Lake District sunshine. On entering the front of the cottage you walk into the living room with wooden floor and wooden cabinet for hanging coats and storing shoes on one side and handy shelves on the other side, wood burning stove on a slate hearth (an original slate tile from the roof of the cottage 'rescued' by our next door neighbour many years ago), bespoke open wrought iron balustrade staircase, smart wireless TV with integrated DVD player, wireless Bluetooth speaker and selection of books, DVDs and family games. For guests looking for walking ideas there are several guidebooks with walk suggestions as well as an Ordnance Survey map of the South Lakes for guests’ use. Walk through to the spacious dining kitchen with electric oven and induction hob, washer dryer, microwave, fridge with icebox, toaster, iron, church pew and dining table and four chairs. The kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking needs. Outdoor table wear is also provided for those wanting to sit out and/or BBQ. Up the old staircase are two decent sized bedrooms and a bathroom. The larger front bedroom has a kingsize bed with memory foam pocket sprung mattress, quilt, throw, bedside chair, wardrobe, drawers, bedside cabinets, alarm clock and bedside lamps, freestanding mirror, hairdryer and a double USB charging socket (ideal for charging phones/tablets etc). The rear bedroom has two single beds with memory foam mattresses, quilts, throws, wardrobe, bedside cabinet with alarm clock and bedside lamp and window seat. There is a modern bathroom with bath, electric shower, electric shaver socket (inside mirrored bathroom cabinet), heated towel rail and underfloor heating. Hand soap and body lotion are provided for guests' use. All bed linen is provided and the beds are made up ready for your arrival. Bath towels are left for each booked guest at the cottage. For guests with very young children we have a travel cot (cot bedding can be provided if requested) and a highchair and fold up step are available at no extra cost. Just let us know at the time of booking and we will ensure these items are left available for you to use. (Unfortunately we are unable to affix stair gates due to the bespoke balustrade.) To the rear of Applethwaite is an enclosed slate paved courtyard with a table, chairs and BBQ. There are 4 outdoor wipeable cushions provided for the outdoor chairs (2 stored on the kitchen shelves and 2 stored on the coat/shoe cabinet by the front door). For cyclists there is a ground anchor in the courtyard and a bike cover and combination padlock are available for securing bikes (stored on the shelf near the cellar door). Whilst there is no dedicated parking with Applethwaite you are able to use the driveway to drop off/unload/load. We then park on nearby streets - the closest being College Road which is only a minute's walk away and a local street map is left in the cottage with the unrestricted parking areas highlighted. BT Infinity unlimited broadband is installed and the password is in the welcome folder in the kitchen. We are able to accommodate any changeover day so there are no restrictions on when you can start your stay. We have a usual 3 night minimum stay. Prices are as stated inclusive of the provision of travel cot and/or highchair and fold up step, but let us know when booking if you require these items as they are stored away when not in use. All rental prices, regardless of length, include welcome pack (containing starter supplies of tea and coffee, milk and initial supply of wood and firelighters for the log burner) and include cleaning cost. Check-in is from 4.00pm and check-out is 10.00am but please check with us as we may be able to be flexible with timings depending on cleaning. We may also be able to accommodate a luggage drop if the cottage won't be ready earlier than 4.00pm so please just message us and if we can accommodate it we will. Lovely stay. Great location.
Refreshing and unfortunately rare to stay somewhere with good quality utensils. Knives that actually cut!
Furthermore, herbs and spices were also available. Making the stay more enjoyable.

We had a great 4 night stay in this lovely cottage. So central, right across from Train Station and food store (Booths). Easy walk to shops and restaurants.

This was our second stay at Applethwaite Cottage and once again, it was great. The cottage is so comfortable, cozy, and with every convenience. Terrific location for those arriving by train without cars. Provides the perfect jumping off place to explore the rambles and sights of the Lake District by bus. Truly kind hostess in Andrea.

Wonderful cottage with every convenience. Very clean and nicely decorated and right in the heart of Windermere. The only issue was the parking which we knew about ahead of time. We were fortunate to always find free parking near the school. Loved the flowers and treats that were left by the hosts too. Would highly recommend a stay here and hope to be back. Lots of restaurants in the area if you are not making your own meals and Booths is across the street if you need groceries.

Great location for both Windermere and other locations in the Lakes with connections nearby for public transport. The cottage itself was lovely, with a large kitchen and very comfy bed! I'd recommend this cottage for a couple or small family who want a great base for exploring the Lake District

This property was very clean and we appreciated how well equipped it was for cooking meals. Very nice towels were provided and the beds were cozy and comfortable. The communication with the owner was excellent and there were clear instructions on how to use all of the appliances which was appreciated. The added touches of flowers and some milk and cake was unexpected. Our stay was pleasant and comfortable. The location is perfect to walk to everything in town including a co op. Our booked tours met at the train station just up the road which was perfect and there is a fabulous food store called Booths attached to the train station as another alternative.

Wonderful cottage!
This is a lovely cottage very central in Windermere. It is very clean and has all the amenities you could possibly need. We stayed there with our two small children and I would say the cottage is child friendly. The only thing to be aware of is that the staircase is a bit steep, so small children will need some help to make their way up and down. The communication with Andrea was quick, efficient and friendly. We would absolutely stay here again!

Location
Great for shopping and eateries and buses. Thought it was closer to Windermere ,the Lake. Would like to have met our host! Lot of traffic by the front door from other cottages. Kept leaving the gate open. The back patio cramped for more than 2 people. Next door restaurant emptied their glass recycle at 5.30 to 6 am!

Perfect location
I have been on many self catering breaks but this was by far the best. The property was beautiful full of character, spotlessly clean and everything that we could possibly need was provided. The location was perfect close to shops pubs and public transport with beautiful scenery to explore within walking distance. We were worried that it might be noisy but it was surprisingly quiet considering we went during the school holidays.

The cottage was absolutely spotless and equipped with everything you could possibly think of. Wonderful welcome pack including tea, coffee, sugar, jam and cake, much appreciated after a long journey up. All the cutlery, crockery and linens of a very high standard. Luxurious toiletries supplied. Bed super comfy! Sofa and armchairs not so, especially if you fancy an evening relaxing at home. The cottage doesn't get any sun which is a shame, so can seem a bit 'gloomy'.
But the worst part, sadly, is the noise! If you've come for a quiet, peaceful stay (particularly if you have young children) then this isn't the place for you! Situated on the corner of a very busy junction at the top of the town, the traffic starts around 6am and is constant. There is a hotel next door from which there is obviously a lot of activity from the kitchen, staff putting rubbish and recycling out etc. Then the youth hostel on the other side - during our week there was a constant stream of people wheeling luggage at all times of the day and night right past the cottage, talking loudly. And then a VERY noisy birthday party held there on the Friday night with people congregating just feet away from our back door clearly very drunk. The music was so loud it shook the walls - OK it did stop at around midnight, but it did keep us awake and if I'd had young children with me I would have been furious.
Sadly we didn't manage to sleep well all week due to the noise all around, which definately spoilt the experience and our hopes of having a relaxing week. How the neighbours who live in this little terrace put up with it I just can't imagine.
For this reason we wouldn't stay again, which is a real pity because the owner obviously takes great pride in this cottage and has put so many thoughtful touches in place. Sorry to have to leave a negative review, but feel it's only fair to point it out to future guests who may value their peace and quiet.
