Dismayed at how quickly their countrymen were being assimilated into American society, the Philadelpia Germans dreamed of building a new city in the “Far West” that could and would be “German in every particular.” In 1837 school teacher George Bayer, who was appointed to serve as the society’s agent, traveled to Missouri and purchased 11,000 acres of the steepest, most rugged terrain to be found anywhere on the Missouri River. It was a beautiful, if highly impractical, site for a town. Meanwhile, back in Philadelphia city planners were mapping out a grand new city, undeterred by their total ignorance of the actual terrain. On paper, Hermann was flat, with spacious market squares and sweeping boulevards. Thinking big, they made their city’s main street 10 feet wider than Philadelphia’s. When the first 17 settlers stepped off the last steamboat of the season into what one writer described as “a howling wilderness,” their starry-eyed idealism died on the spot. Some were furious to discover that the Hermann lots they had purchased back in Philadelphia were what today’s residents jokingly refer to as “vertical acreage.” The fact that the town survived at all is a testament to German determination and hard work. Making the best of a bad situation, the Germans took their cue from Mother Nature and planted vineyards on the rocky hillsides, where wild grapevines grew with tangled abandon. A decade later, steamboats brought St. Louis visitors to Hermann’s first Weinfest, where they enjoyed more than their share of sweet Catawba wine and marveled at the grapevine-covered hills. By the turn of the century, Hermann’s winemakers had become wildly successful. Stone Hill Winery had grown to be the second largest winery in the country and was winning gold medals at World’s Fair competitions around the globe. The town’s numerous vintners were producing an incredible three million gallons of wine a year. In its glory days Hermann was a rollicking river port with a tavern on every corner and the largest general store between St. Louis and Kansas City. The party ended with the one-two knockout punch of anti-German sentiment provoked by World War I and the Volstead Act of 1919. Prohibition sent Hermann reeling into the Great Depression a full decade before the rest of the country. The only silver lining was that economic ruin put the town into a time warp-there was simply no money to modernize the old buildings. Today Hermann’s Old-World charm attracts visitors in search of the quiet pleasures of an earlier era. Much of downtown is a historic district where brick homes from the 1800s hug the sidewalk in the traditional German style. More than 150 buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Idle for nearly 50 years after Prohibition, Hermann’s wineries are once again the main tourist attraction. The seven wineries in and around Hermann account for more than a third of the state’s total production.

Stayed for two nights. The house is great for a group of adults or families with kids. Plenty of space and bathrooms. Very clean! Cassie was super sweet and even gave recommendations on fun places to check out. Will definitely book this property again if available.

The house is so cute! Three rooms gave everyone their own space. We loved the wine cellar. The online pictures showed it empty so we were so excited to see a faux fire, twinkle lights and comfy seating. Spent an evening just talking and enjoying some local wine.

Charming home with everything you would need for an enjoyable getaway. Even with the extreme heat the air-conditioning held up and provided comfort. Bedding was very comfortable and everything clean. Very quite neighborhood.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend visit. Our only issue was transportation upon arrival but once we figured that out we were great!

Gorgeous home, very comfortable and homey. Tons of space and anything you could need while away. The area was so charming and so much to do and see.

We stayed at this home to celebrate many different situations. The place is unique and interesting. The house is well equipped with all you need. The inside of the house is comfortable and fun.
The outside needs some love. The surrounding area is also rundown.
The house is about a mile to downtown but there are no true side walk (so is not an easy walk).

The house was nice and roomy. We dont think the beds were actual queens in the upper and lower bedrooms.
The walls were crumbly in spots and warning to anyone looking, the inside and outside stairs are a trip to the ER waiting to happen. Furniture and door mechanisms were prone to spontaneous disassembly.
Along with crazy low ceilings, had cooling issues in the upstairs bedroom. That couple had to move to the living room to sleep.

Very unique property. If you are not stair people, this house is not for you, but it epitomizes Hermann. Hermann is very hilly, and this house is built on one of the hills. House was very clean and had the necessary supplies. A Casey's convenience store was right down the hill for anything you might need. Beds were comfortable, as was the living room furniture. We stayed in the spring and it was cool, but I'm not sure how well the air conditioner would work on a hot July weekend, especially in the upstairs bedroom. The lower level bedroom people might find that they have company! I know these reviews want 5 star ratings, and I gave it 5 stars because there was nothing wrong, but if you've stayed in as many VRBOs as we have, it has some quirks and it was not quite as good as some we have stayed, so if I was judging it against other properties, it would be more 4-4.5 just due to its age and accessibility. But we would stay there again.

This property was perfect for our stay during my sisters bachelorette party. The trolley picked us up right at the curb and brought us back. The house was clean, organized and so cozy! We will be back!

The inside of the house is BEAUTIFUL! I was spectacle when we drove up as the outside is ran down some and needs some work. Parked on the road as the driveway is steep. Our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. Would recommend to others and would stay again! Only thing we noticed that wasn’t there were games to play as it rained during our stay and no blow dry. We have stayed at other places and it had both of those items.

I loved the decor and updated showers in the bathrooms. Just a heads up if anyone in your party has mobility issues this house probably wouldn't work very well. It has several steps between rooms that just makes it quirky.

I was unable to travel to the property. My friends went and reported to me that the house was not prepared for them to stay. They did stay and only reported it to me before departing. I texted the Hostess and explained it to her. I have the texts from my friends with a hefty list of unfavorable things. They should have let the hostess know right away so it could have been taken care of. The dirty linens and towels was a major issue to them.

Beautiful home inside. Lacks curb appeal. Stairs weren't super safe outside. Lots of crickets in the basement, which is where 1 bedroom and bathroom is located. Beds were super comfortable. Kitchen was very nice. House was nice and roomy. We didn't bring any games, so I recommend them having some stocked. We'd definitely stay there again. We had a good time in Hermann.

Perfect historic home for a Hermann bridal shower
This lovely historic home was the perfect setting to host a brunch and bubbly bridal shower for my daughter! The wine cellar, with its own street entrance, was a cool and intimate place to eat, sip, and celebrate the bride to be! It was the perfect size for our party of 18. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, and the modern, French door fridge made entertaining easy! The steps down to the cellar did make setting up quite a workout, but it was all worth it! The rest of the home was a lovely space to relax and unwind after the bridal shower fun. Would highly recommend renting this home for a relaxing stay or to host a small, unique event!

My family and friends came into town for a wedding and we stayed at this lovely home. We had a great experience and enjoyed learning a bit of history of the house. From sitting on the patio to hanging out in the old cellar, we had plenty of room to spread out.

The only complaint is that the description should have mentioned that it was not ADA friendly.. our family has 2 - 83 year old and a blind adult child.

Great house and location for myself and 5 girlfriends to stay for the weekend. About a mile from downtown so we took a cab at night. Trolley ($20/person) picked us up at our door and took to wineries. Super convenient! Overall house was clean and the perfect size for 6 girls. Loved the quaint and unique feel of the house but had all modern amenities you could want. Will come back for sure!

Get home base for a girls weekend in Hermann. Little far from downtown, but walkable. Trolley and info on it in the house were super helpful to get around. Did have a hard time cooling the house down and it was pretty warm all weekend.
