The reason we chose this place? The whirlpool. Guess what? ItDidn’t work. The second day they sent maintenance out to say “yep, it’s not working” though they said at checkin it had been serviced the day of our arrival. Only solution? Have a whirlpool service person come out. That did not happen. So they refunded the nominal (compared to cost) whirlpool fee. Although the people at the rental co were polite, more could have been done for this major disappointment. Other quibbles? It is up a steep hill and we had to shovel to get upIt on arrival. Not enough blankets. They say there is a shuttle to resort but the stop is a long walk in ski boots.

This home really has that mountain feel. We loved the wooded neighborhood and rolling hills. Definitely recommend!

The unit had a great location but needs some cleaning.
The exterior deck had a lot of debris like twigs and the furniture was not clean enough to sit on.
The interior had a lot of dead bugs by the windows and doors, a not-so-fresh odor, and had a lot of dust around the baseboards.
There was nowhere to put the trash. It is in need of a bear box outside the unit for trash.
The unit did have everything you need for a stay though. Fully equipped.
The drive is extremely steep. I recommend a high-profile vehicle in the summer months at the very least. My 4wd Highlander was losing traction during wet conditions.

My wife and I go to sugar mountain every year for my birthday which resides in January. Three of the main features that we look for and filtered through VRBO were: hot tub, pet friendly, and ski and ski out. Those three were the only requirements that we were looking for, and of the utmost importance. So my VRBO search landed us on the sugar shack. The price I thought was fair, so we booked it. Upon arrival on Monday January 9th, the first thing we did after unloading the car was head straight for the hot tub after a long ride to North Carolina. We noticed that the water was 49° in the hot tub. So I turned on the Jets and the heater and after a couple hours notice the water was not any warmer. I called the after hours maintenance line to discuss the issue and the young lady said she sent an email a week ago letting me know that the water did not work on the hot tub. I checked my email and she actually sent two days prior to our arrival, not 7 days. I explained to her that I was highly dissatisfied and she basically acted like it was a "tough luck" type of situation. Two days prior to our arrival there was no way we could have done anything about it regardless. Mind you my wife and I have worked again disappointed. So we then start checking the cleanliness of the house. We took multiple pictures of many areas that were not clean, blankets that had food stains on them, dried up spaghetti sauce or chili, the carpet in the master bedroom was disgusting with pet urine, shower head and master bathroom was full of mildew or mold. The ONLY shower upstairs. The heater on the back porch did not work, was not a ski in/ski out location or did not have designated walkthrough to slopes. I work in the construction industries and deal with the general consumer on a daily basis. The customer service that I received from the management company was subpar to say the least and ZERO effort in "Making the situation RIGHT for me the customer. I will attach pictures or send via email

We planned a trip to Banner Elk with very short notice so could not find a boarder for our dog in advance. Our expectations for cleanliness and quality of furnishing were not very high going into a pet friendly short-rerm rental. We were pleasantly surprises. It was actually one of the cleanest units we have stayed in the area, and we have stayed in many. Only complaint, mattress in master bedroom is way past needing replaced.

We had a great time relaxing at the Sugar Shack and exploring the area. The stairs in the house are steep. So just be careful walking up and down. Well equipped kitchen, plenty of seating and relaxing hot tub. Overall great stay and would recommend.

The hot tub is the reason we booked this property so finding out right before check in and not being given any other options was pretty disappointing. It was also very obvious no one had been up to the unit in days due to not seeing any foot prints in the snow leading to the hot tub and fresh snow laying on top of the cover. The driveway was icy and we had no warning before entering, and had to salt the driveway ourselves. Once we entered the cabin we noticed there was hardly any silverware or glasses and didn’t realize they were all in the dishwasher still until the second morning we were there. The only things provided are dishwasher tablets, garbage bags and salt and pepper in the kitchen, if you want to wash dishes bring your own dish soap. If you want to cook, bring your own oil. The home was clean, but was lacking in servers areas as detailed above. We are mostly upset about not being able to use the hot tub, and hardly being compensated for the issue.

The cabin is absolutely beautiful up on the mountain, complete with board games and hot tub. We had a great experience there. Please note, however, that the driveway is extremely steep. It was a bit challenging getting up with all wheel drive. As such we only could have one vehicle parked there and the rest down at the resort parking. It took almost the full 3 days for the cabin to warm up but thankfully they have space heaters throughout. The one thing we wished they had is the keyless lock entry like a prior cabin we rented. Of the two sets of keys we received, only one worked. Overall we were extremely happy with our experience at sugar shack cabin.

Beautiful with lots of great space!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the property, which had gracious spaces for us to enjoy. We had a surprising amount of winter weather during our stay, which made it actually impossible to get up the driveway, even with 4x4. We were able to as a compromise get off the main road so as not to interrupt traffic but we otherwise were not able to park close until our checkout day when it had warmed up. We also noticed the heat took quite a long time to bring the property to a comfortable temperature, with the cold outside the house heating took until the next day to reach a comfortable indoor temperature, and for a while was even getting slightly colder as temperatures dropped outside! For those staying in the rooms they were able to get by that evening with personal heaters placed in each bedroom but the unfortunate ones on the pullout couch had little options until the house warmed.
Once the house heated we had a wonderful time enjoying the amenities (hot tub, porch fire table, etc.), And watching the snow after a day of skiing. We will definitely recommend this location to others.

This was a nice place and had all the comforts of home. It a quiet mountain town with other houses in the area, but not right on top of one another. I would definitely go back.

Needs spring cleaning, repairs and an updated listing.
Entertainment center, wood burning indoor fireplace and hammock were in the listing but have been removed from property. Very musty pet odor on bottom floor. Would not have stayed if we had to sleep on the bottom floor. Cigarette butts were all around outside even though the listing says no smoking. The only heater that worked properly was the space heater in master bedroom. The toilet flapper in master bathroom was broken so the toilet ran constantly. The flood lights at the entrance steps were not working so we had to use phones to see at night and also lighting in hot tub area was not working. You can tell the place had been cleaned, but the property was showing it's age and needed maintenance inside and out. I would not stay again in the condition it is currently in.

Great place for family and kids. Well appointed and clean cabin, very nicely laid out in an awesome location. Checkin and checkout processes were simple and well communicated.
Our only gripe was the radiant heating units were not working properly and we left a message on the after hours phone number but didn't hear back or get it fixed. Since the weather was not too cold it didn't matter to us.

The carpet runners on the steps were NOT attached and made the stairs kind of dangerous. Bed was comfy in the room I was in ( bottom right side) The driveway is very steep!! I’m glad we had decent weather, I would not have been able to get up or down in the snow/ ice! I’d stay again when the weather is good.

The cabin is equipped with propane wall heaters AND built in electric Mitsubishi mini split units. I was told that the propane heater wasn't working but I don't think they knew that the other heat source wasn't working either. When I talked to the very nice lady about having no heat, a gentleman in the background was practically yelling at her to tell me that I just "needed to use the remote" to get the heat to work. He totally disregarded the fact that I was telling her it wasn't working. There was a repair man that came by the next day to fix the propane wall heater and he checked the Mitsubishi unit about found that it had been damaged by squirrels or something. I feel like they need to have someone check their properties more often to make sure everything is in working order. And I especially feel like the customer shouldn't be disregarded when making a complaint.

We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin has parking for 4-5 vehicles when parked strategically. The warning about 4wd in the winter should be heeded. There are about 20 steps to get to the upstairs living area. The interior staircase has carpet strips that are not attached to the floor. We removed them during our stay and replaced them at checkout, because my daughter in law fell down the steps when the carpet slipped. There are two bedrooms and one bathroom with a washer and dryer downstairs. There’s an outside entrance to the downstairs that has about 3 steps. The hot tub is also on the downstairs porch. The hot tub kept me skiing all 5 days we were there and is located under the upstairs decking making it sheltered from rain and snow. The upstairs has a master bedroom with a bathroom and an open kitchen and living space. The sofa had a tear in the back of the cushion, but was comfortable. There’s everything you’ll need to cook including a toaster and a regular brew coffee maker. The interior of the house does not have a wood burning fireplace as it has been removed. This was a disappointment for us. There’s a gas grill on the deck right under the camera. We really enjoyed our stay and had we been skiing at Sugar we could have possibly walked to the slopes. We could hear the snow blowers at night while we were outside, but not inside. If we decided to ski Sugar in the future we would definitely consider this cabin.

House was nicer than the pics showed and the location is top notch. Not sure if it was the rental company or the home owners that had the driveway cleared but we were so thankful. It is a pretty steep driveway but even with the recent snow it was cleared for us to pull up it. THANK YOU!! Hot tub was very nice and our kids loved it and the Hot water in the house was resort quality. Overall our stay was wonderful and was exactly what we needed. If we get the chance to stay here again we will for sure.
