We have stayed at this hotel around 10 times in the past year. Arrived for our three night stay, for which Booking.com had taken full payment, to be told at reception that our booking had been cancelled as the hotel was to be used for asylum seekers. No advanced warning, and we had to pay in full again at the Premier Inn.

Good location in the heart of Shrewsbury. Comfortable, & authentic old county town hotel
All a bit frayed & faded. Breakfast offering could do with improvement

Great location - beautiful old building
Maybe needs a refresh

The breakfast was good
The hotel seems to be on decline. The restaurant is closed and the general cleanliness of the common areas is poor. I will not stay there again.

great location though onsite parking is limited. staff helpful and friendly
very tired decor, carpets felt grubby. windows wouldn’t stay open - kept slamming shut, so room was too hot. heated towel rail on constantly so again…. room too hot. no lift so had to carry bags up four flights of stairs (we are not youngsters). given a room overlooking road with a nice view but traffic and late night revellers (on a Sunday) very noisy. booked through booking.com and felt we’d been given a sub standard room … asked if we could change room after first noisy disturbed night but told they didn’t have any clean rooms available….. hmmmm

the location
it was extremely dated, carpets worn out, furniture and decor similar. sadly this could be a wonderful hotel, it needs a huge update on every way.

Beautiful historic building, very nicely preserved in time while still maintaining suitable standards expected of a modern hotel. We loved the whole vibe of this 16th Century Coaching Inn and were made to feel very welcome by staff. The top floor room was quiet and spacious with views over the old rooftops. Having read some comments about the fact that it needs updating we were apprehensive at first, however were pleasantly surprised that this is in fact the whole point of the building! Entering this place is like going back in time to another world. Parking on-site was cheap and driving down the old cobbled lane to get there was an experience in itself. Our room was very quiet, being on the top floor, and very spacious indeed. Bed was super comfortable and there was a nice large bath with shower in spacious bathroom. We were very much impressed by the rustic feel of the place and have vowed to return in the future.
A little bit expensive, but in comparison to the general prices of accomodation in the town we feel it provided good value as a one-off treat.

Breakfast is decent apart from the hard fried eggs - 3 days on the trot ! The parking and location is perfect for the town . It’s the cheapest “hotel” option with a car park In the centre.
Getting very dated and poor value for money . Booked double rooms , single occupancy as no singles were available at time of booking then were told we could not have a discount for only 1 breakfast due to the booking saying 2 people were occupying . Happy to only give us 1 breakfast though 🤷♂️ Also now charging residents £5 a night to park separately and you have to pay it all upfront when you check in . We were paying nearly half this a few years ago for the same rooms and the hotel is in decline. Thread bear furniture. Broken slats under the beds . Dated showers . It all just about works but in need of huge investment if they want to be charging £340 for 3 nights single occupancy . One small but indicative issue .. the automatic coffee machine was not working on the last day so they just put Nescafé sachets out to make your own with hot water. They have a separate coffee making machine in the same room ( for chargeable coffees as part of bar service I think ) - poor show not to be using this instead if you wanted a decent coffee ! Penny pinching in my view . Door cards kept failing which meant you had to go back down to front desk to then be met with “your putting it by your mobile phone!” . In other words it’s your fault not ours that our antiquated door system keeps failing. Not keen on the guy on reception either .. could be far more welcoming and pleasant. Or maybe he feels he is flogging a dead horse .

Excellent reception staff. Friendly and efficient. Location. Parking. Good value. It's an old property. Expect to get slightly lost while finding your room on the 3rd floor.
Rooms are a little tired in places.

Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast was lovely too. Room was a good size and facilities were good.
Found the bed very uncomfortable. Didn't sleep well. Mattress was extremely soft, as I lay on it I could feel the actual divan underneath.

The furniture in the room looked quite worn, but it wasn't a problem.

Loved the decor in the hotel and the nice old fashioned touches. Good breakfast and location was great, close to lots of pubs etc

staff are lovely, polite and helpful and breakfast was great everyday
reaching the top floor with no lift, over 5 nights has left us exhausted.
2 bulbs in room not working.
furniture in room needs updating, ripped and worn chair. bed although old was ok but couldn’t sit in it to drink morning brew as headboard seemed to lean in?! and had to put towels down back of mattress or we lost our pillows down the gap between mattress and headboard.

On the return from our night out, the night receptionist was extremely helpful, kind & gave us some teabags & biscuits to take up to our room, after we mentioned we had only managed to have one cup of tea. The staff at Breakfast we're all very helpful as well.
Bearing in mind it was a very warm day 30 degrees, there was no fan in our room, we had to go down 3 floors to ask for one.We moved the bedside drawer to put the fan on & found crisps behind it?
The heat in the room was unbearable, this was due to towel radiator being permanently ON. After asking several times for it to be switched off we received no assistance whatsoever.
Poor supply of tea in room, no coffee & only 3 sugars.
No bottled water in the room, like some hotels or even B&B's supply especially with it costing £171 for just One Night!!
Shower in room very hard to control & even harder to turn off!
The bed was comfortable but due to the excessive heat it made it a difficult night's sleep.
As we were checking out, we were advised there was a lift, but it was out of order & had been out of order for some time?
Sent a detailed e-mail to the Hotel & unfortunately we haven't received a response.
Sadly will definitely not be returning to this Hotel.

The location is in the centre of town and parking on site is possible at £5 a day. The the twin room was right at the top of the building. It was a good size and nice and airy. It was quiet, even with all the windows open in the middle of summer. I would definitely stay here again.
The building has lots of stairs and glass panel doors to get to the very top. They were not fire doors, so it would have been helpful if the doors had been secured open to make it a lot easier to get through with suitcases.

Central location
Hotel was run down. In our room there was a hole in the wall. The bathroom was very dated and not that clean. Chair in the room was frayed and worn.
Every stair carpet was worn and soo to become dangerous and fire doors not to standard.
Breakfast portions were small and the buffer selections were not replenished.
