Highlander Mountain House in the Blue Ridge mountains is just divine! The design and decor are so charming, from the cozy rooms to the lovely common areas. I can't get enough of the warm ambiance throughout the property. And let's talk about the location – being near downtown Highlands is such a bonus, with easy access to trails and activities. But the real star of the show? The restaurant! It's hands down the best part, serving up delicious meals in a cozy setting. Whether I'm traveling with friends, family, or flying solo, Highlander Mountain House always feels like home. Can't wait for my next visit – it's truly a slice of heaven in the mountains!

A warm and cozy place to stay in the best mountain town!! We enjoyed the restaurant and bar each day / night we stayed. The staff was outstanding and the bartender made delicious cocktails.

The check in staff upgraded my room since my room wasn’t available. I will be back

For the area it is an appropriately nice stay:) you have to appreciate the historic structure and experience.

Inn is very cozy with an antique Lodge aesthetic. Rooms are small but with thoughtful details and nice appointments. The mattresses were comfy and the linens great!

I enjoyed the quiet and safety of the "bunk house" located behind the main house. Parking was easy and the bed was comfortable. The room was small, but that didn't matter.
3.0
People that book on Expedia should understand that a “standard” room is not located in the main inn, it is located in the “bunkhouse” which is across the parking lot behind the inn. This was not explained in the listing. The room we received was very small and not particularly nice. We had trouble figuring out where to put suitcases. The location was excellent, however. We had a great breakfast at the main inn one morning, and the staff was generally friendly and helpful.

Very noisy, mattress was way to soft, window covering did not cover windows.

Room was very small and decorated with old, worn out furniture. Sheets were stained. AC was a window unit, that was loud and obtrusive. Shower curtain was so long it blocked the drain. The property surrounding was beautiful, the restaurant delicious, the staff very friendly.

Was in the bunkhouse in back of property. Room was ok certainly had most everything you needed but was very cramped. Thought it was rather overpriced for what it was - view of the back of hotel and parking lot.

Great location with good rooms.

We were not aware there was no elevator and carrying bags and luggage up stairs was a hassle. Parking was minimal. The place is very unique but needs attention to amenities and condition of facilities and comfort of furniture; no breakfast the 2 days we were there;poor shower drain.

I love this place. I payed almost 700 dollars to stay here and was not told the dining and bar was off limits because of a wedding party. So I ram around to have a decent evening.

Very interesting historic building. Very friendly staff. Room medium size but very comfortable. Unfortunately restaurant not open for days we stayed. Easy walking distance to other restaurants.

Highlands is always damp because it is a temperate rainforest , and it is tough, but you need large dehumidifiers. The dining room was closed and I could hear guests complaining about how disappointed they were. They were not told ahead of time. The rooms were cute but the size of the room for what you were paying is not comparable. Next time I have rented an Airbnb that is less money but it is an entire home still walking distance to town. Need a lot of updating and cleaning. The couch in the lobby should be an embarrassment, impossible to get up

It has the potential to be AAA. The rooms are cute and the bed is comfortable. But there is no closet, no place to open a suitcase, and tight. You have to take turns moving around the room. Outside is uneven rock stairs, rails that wobble, and uneven walking areas to the entrance.
2.0
the location was great and so was the staff, but the room was very small, no room for luggage after opening, you had to edge around the bed to get the the bath, and the closets were practically nonexistent

My wife and I took a last minute roadtrip only a few hours from where we live to enjoy the mountains. Our first stop was in Highlands, North Carolina. The Highlander Mountain House was supposed to be a quaint and charming one night escape to a bygone time. It was nothing but a disaster.
The problem's.
Parking:
The entrance to the parking lot is narrow and there is little room to maneuver a car. There are only a few parking spots on a hill and the lot is confusing with no signs with directions to check-in.
The paths are rugged, uneven and treacherous. I almost fell. I am older and my advice for any older travelers is avoid the hotel if you value your safety. This hotel is not by any means accessible to anybody with any physical limitations.
Check-in:
The receptionist led on the dangerous walk to the "Bunkhouse", to our room. There was a dog in one of the rooms that was barking, reverberating throughout the building. I complained and led us back to the main house. I had to pay an upcharge just to get a room without a barking dog.
The room:
The room was dangerous. Lamps did not work and the television blocked the bed making it impossible to safely get in and out of for two people. At night I almost injured myself on the television going to the bathroom.
The bed: The mattress was literally a mound of form that you would roll off onto the floor. Impossible to sleep and unsafe.
Conclusion?
Avoid the hotel for your comfort and safely.

Absolutely beautiful. Love the antiques. The whole ambiance about the place is like a warm hug. The bunk house floor was a bit cold but it was really cold outside. Great little town and friendly people.

The historic and classic hotel was located in the middle of Highlands within walking distance of any restaurant or shop one might be interested. The common area was spacious with sitting areas and fireplaces inside as well as outdoors. Staff were courteous and helpful.

We liked the location right on Main Street. We felt the room was very small for what we paid. Not alot of amenities.

Stayed in the bunkhouse. Had not realized this would be the case when booked. It turned out great though. Extremely comfortable, cozy and quiet. The young lady on the front desk was extremely pleasant and welcoming. Located right on Main Street, short walk to shops and restaurants

This is one of our favorite places to visit! My husband and I have been here twice this year and absolutely love the coziness and impeccable decor and incredible service!! The sweet lady at the front desk took such good care of us as soon as we checked in. She gave us a special room for my celebratory birthday stay and even gave my hubby and me a glass of sparkling rose and a craft beer upon check-in. The house/lodge is gorgeous and has a 5-star restaurant inside. Two wpod burning fireplaces and talented bartender thar created craft cocktails that were divine!! Every moment of our stay was amazing!! The location is perfect as you are right downtown Highlands and it makes it easy to go explore and shop, then walk back to rest or get a cocktail of a bite to eat. We highly recommend staying here. You won’t regret it!! The rooms are small but they are perfect for 2 people and beautifully decorated. It is a unique and boutique hotel/lodge Record players in each room!!! We are music lovers so this was a wonderful surprise!

The entire staff was friendly, thoughtful, and helpful. Notable was Alastair and Brian. They helped make the stay special and fun. We stayed in the bunk house due to availability. It was clean and comfortable and suited our needs. However, next time i will book early to secure a room in the "Big House". They were outstanding!

The hotel was really just a place to sleep for me, but was pleasant and comfortable and the receptionist was very nice and helpful. I had no issues.

I had always wanted to spend some time in Highlands, and the HMH from the outside looked like a splendid place to stay. But I was extremely disappointed as it was far below my expectations. The room in the Bunkhouse was tiny and unsafe and with a very noisy wall A/C unit.

Very warm and inviting fireplace near the bar. Walking distance to restaurants. Very helpful staff.
