Le Grand Kyu Karuizawa

We are not breakfast people so we did not eat at the hotel. We usually have a cup of coffee and a pastry for breakfast, however, none of the bakeries open before 10:00 AM but we could make coffee in our room.

I had difficulty regulating the climate control in our room. The thermostat looks very sophisticated, however, programing it was not reasonable. The air flow in the room was too high and noisy so the staff reduced it from their location which puzzled me. With such a sophisticated thermostat, why could I not control this feature? It was difficult communicating this to staff.

We really enjoyed our stay. The rooms were clean and spacious, the staff were wonderful, and the breakfast was very good, although we would have appreciated a wider choice of coffee options. The rooftop open-air onsen was especially enjoyable. The hotel is also very well located, within walking distance of Karuizawa Station as well as many restaurants and cafés. The only thing we missed was the option to order a lighter à la carte dinner, as the only choice was a set menu and we do not usually eat such large meals in the evening. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay and would happily return if we visit Karuizawa again.

As mentioned above, we would have appreciated a wider choice of coffee at breakfast, as only black filter coffee was available. We also missed the option to order a lighter à la carte dinner, as the only dinner option available was a set menu.

Staff very friendly. it was our anniversary and they prepared little surprises for us. location was within walking distance to the ginza and food was readily available. Dinner at the hotel was good.

Location and general quality of the room.

Staff couldn't speak english so it was difficult to get help. Check in time is too rigid. We arrived earlier than 3 pm and the room was ready but we were not allowed access till 3. all other hotels allow early check in if the room ios ready.
