Hotel San Michele

Lovely older hotel, incredible staff, incredible views, quick walk into Anacapri. Nice place to start walks around the island. Very comfortable stay.

Salvatore, the taxi driver, is the best thing about this hotel. He provides a fantastic service picking up and dropping off guests. He's utterly charming and full of recommendations. The pool is large, and good for length swimming. Incredible views and an easy walk into Ana Capri. We had a large bedroom with an amazing bathtub. The room was kept squeaky clean during our stay.

Unfortunately the reception staff were fairly dour and lacking in warmth. Stuffy and old-fashioned in tone. This hotel needs a serious makeover. It has remarkable views over the bay, but we felt it was all too reliant on these views and made little effort in other areas. There's a sense of decaying grandeur - the furniture is tired and has been dropped about the place with no consideration to zoning, comfort or ambiance. Some children's toys are left abandoned by the dining room door. The space under the formerly grand staircase has been used as a dumping ground for cardboard boxes and luggage. Plaster is falling off the walls. Whilst the pool area is jolly and the drinks are fairly priced, it has the feel of a campsite pool; quite cheap and cheerful and not the luxurious or exclusive sort of feeling you might get in a another hotel. It feels pretty disconnected from the main hotel. We had a problem with noise as hotel staff were loudly loading linens into vans outside our room at about 11pm. The breakfast was fairly poor with bad coffee.
