Staff gave me a choice between two rooms and that was all he had to offer.

The Hotel was clean and the rooms quite big for NYC. For US standard I guess it can pass for a 4-star hotel, for European standards it would be a 3-star max. The price was really good for NYC and it's close to the metro. You'll reach Manhattan really quickly.
Well, when you come from the metro, you'll have to pass the projects to reach the hotel. Google maps will even take you through the projects. If you are used to NYC and you have stayed in neighbourhoods that have not been gentrified, you'll be fine. For families or first timers I would not recommend this hotel. The area is not too nice and unfortunately doesn't feel save.

Close to the subway station, close to food stores.
Poor basic facilities such as tea or coffee making in the room, small pillows, room not 100% clean and being on the first floor next to reception and the bag storage room was a nightmare so noisy, could hear full conversations from staff and other customers word for word. Hear staff laughing and joking first thing in the morning at high volume it’s hard to block out.
