This rural area is home to many masserie, the typical Apulian country estates, and is known for its ‘trulli’, the distinctive, cone-shaped buildings made of natural stone that can be seen everywhere and are found in great numbers in places such as Alberobello (40 km). Other famous towns in the Salento region include Lecce (90 km), Otranto (130 km) and Brindisi (airport approx. 50 km), all of which are easily accessible by car. Taranto is only about 30 km away. You’ll return from your sightseeing trips absolutely delighted, as the ‘heel of Italy’ (il tacco d’Italia), as this region is often called, has so much to offer: The historic town centres are mostly in the Baroque style and feature ornately decorated house façades and ochre-coloured building stones. Furthermore, the region of Apulia, which is so rich in culture and tradition, offers superb local cuisine and excellent wines. It is an ideal holiday destination for an unforgettable and varied break, where a few days on the coast are sure to be on the itinerary – the coast here boasts wonderful sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.
