As the home port of numerous sailing ships in the 18th and 19th centuries, Breege was one of the wealthiest towns on Rügen.
The town traces its origins to a Slavic settlement and was first mentioned in a document in 1313. Since 1895, tourism has played a predominant role here. The previously dominant trade and fishing industries have become insignificant. Today, many vacation apartments and vacation homes are available for rent in Breege. The highlight of Breege/Juliusruh, however, is the Schaabe, a land bridge approximately 12 km long and 200 m wide connecting the Jasmund and Wittow peninsulas. On one side, there are kilometers of fine-sand beaches opening onto the open Baltic Sea; on the other, the vast Jasmund Bodden—an unspoiled reed-lined coast with wonderfully tranquil coves and lakes. It’s ideal for fishing. In the shallow waters of the Bodden, you’ll find mainly zander, pike, and perch. The occasional eel also finds its way into the small bays. Fishing here is done from the shore or from a rented boat. Fishing boats are available in the harbors of Breege or Wiek.
