Castanea delle Furie is set on the San Rizzo hills, about 300 meters above sea level and only 5 km from Messina. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the Strait of Messina, with roads connecting nearby villages and Tyrrhenian coast destinations. The landscape features gentle valleys often stretching to the sea, with the ocean as a dominant backdrop. This hillside location, healthy air, tranquility, and local hospitality made it a renowned holiday spot for notable Messina aristocratic families, as shown by the many historic villas. Although historical sources are limited, the village likely dates back to the founding of Messina. You can visit year-round, but to fully experience the local colors, flavors, and traditions, plan your stay during one of the annual festivals. At Christmas, just 50 meters away, you can visit southern Italy’s most famous living nativity scene, held from 12/25 to 1/6. The village also lies on one of the world’s three main raptor migration routes (along with Gibraltar and the Bosphorus): in April-May and September-October, you can spot eagles soaring above Casa Domenico.
