Set your expectations at the price range you are paying. Vancouver Backpacker House is an excellent low budget option near the sky train giving it quick and easy access to all Vancouver. I was travelling solo and felt safe with a comfortable bed in a location that allowed me to explore. There is no other option at this price range with the convenience and location to amenities. I saved a lot of money for activities and dining/drinking by choosing a low cost option and it met my needs.
The pillow did smell like dirty unwashed hair and I did end up using my travel pillow instead so wasn't a major. All up, very good value for money and with the next option costing 4 x as much; I have very little to complain about!

The single room was very cosy. It’s bare minimum. If it wasn’t so expensive for what you’re getting, it would be quite good, but as it stands $600+ for five nights is frankly ridiculous given the standards of cleanliness and the space.
