We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Tsuganoki ryokan. Our private onsen was a plus as we were able to view the beautiful trees in the distance and cool air blowing thru the slates. The host was very kind and friendly and our hostess, Ms. Nakamura, at our breakfast and dinner, was so sweet and joyful. The meals were fantastic as we were able to try so many different kinds of food so beautifully and creatively displayed. Thank you!! We highly recommend this place.

There wasn't a single thing we didn't like.

Absolutely mind blowing how well the service, facilities, rooms, onsen and food were. This was the best hotel in all of Japan we've been to in 17-days. While we were the only foreign guests, they were very welcoming, our server tried her very best to explain how to eat each meal with words and gestures, it was amazing. Can recommend to anyone that wants a quiet retreat from the big cities

I absolutely loved the open-air bath, although I initially thought it would have onsen water. It was amazing that the water's temperature is maintained at all times. It had gotten to hot at some point and I had to ask the staff to adjust it.

The building was a bit run-down, and the rooms just felt old and not super clean. I had someone from the station call the hotel to pick us up, but they told us the shuttle service from the train station was only from after check-out and they wouldn't accommodate when we arrived earlier. While this was reasonable, we saw the shuttle pass us on our walk to the ryokan as they were dropping off people. I felt snubbed and it left a stain on the rest of the stay. The service was mostly friendly, but the meals felt rushed and there was little care to attention. The food itself was also not great, which I was really disappointed about, as the kaiseki meals are such a big part of a ryokan stay. Dinner was really lackluster, but breakfast was slightly better. The fish served during both meals were dry, cold, and too salty. Most of the food lacked flavor, while they were nicely presented.
