Bedroom up steep stairs

Incredible traditional property. Beautiful well kept gardens. Onsens both inside and outside were just wonderful. The room was equipped with everything you need. Tea coffee, iced water, toiletries. Lots of lovely little touches. Although this property is clearly very old, all modern amenities are provided. The food was outstanding at both breakfast and evening meal. The staff are kind and very helpful. We didn’t have time for breakfast on the last day but they made us a wonderful bento to take with us.

Magical retreat, and a well-manicured experience. The detached house was immaculate despite its age, and every amenity was laid out nicely.

For the price, it would have been nice if they included at least the first alcoholic beverage with dinner...instead, it was a separate charge I had to pay at checkout. Also, we would have liked to have been given the option to enjoy our kaiseki dinner and breakfast in the tatami room overlooking the river at least once, but we were never given the option. They may have assumed that because my last name wasn't Japanese that we preferred Western seating - however, I did book Japanese futon bedding on tatami so that is a bit of a disconnect. Lastly, the hotel website and in-room binder suggested that we visit its sister property Kotohira Onsen Yume Sansui, but when we inquired we were told that it was not open during our stay.
