Middlethorpe Hall & Spa

Buildings, garden and spa, friendly staff, lovely features in the house. Spa was very enjoyable.

Lacked clear explanation how dinner and breakfast worked. Dining area was a little to intermet for my personal taste A little disorganised in reception. Could do with reacting quicker to customer issue of making 2 bookings. As initial booking did not send confirmation email. Final bill breakdown wasn't clearly explained.

Comfortable suite in the courtyard. Big bed, excellent shower, all staff very helpful, nice grounds, convenient for the races, and easy taxi ride into the city. Good breakfast served a la carte, although service a bit slow in the busy dining rooms. Very quiet location. Pool and spa very welcome after a long day in the city. Plenty of free parking.

The wifi was rather variable depending on where you were on site. Tv in our room needed some explanation!

From the hearty welcome on arrival, to being assisted with luggage into the car, customer service was absolutely exemplary. Located in 20 acres of stunning gardens, this historic building is an absolute pleasure to visit. We stayed in the main house, but the courtyard is only steps away and looks lovely too. Filled with antique furniture, you get the sense of heritage rather than opulence. Our room was spacious, it overlooked the lawns and beyond, where we saw deer and squirrels. The beds were very comfortable. There was a rain shower over the bath and lovely toiletries. We had treatments in the Spa, where once again, the experience was exemplary. There is a good sized pool and a nearby gym. We enjoyed after dinner drinks in the drawing room. After a lovely breakfast, we enjoyed exploring the walled garden, parkland down to the lake and then coffee on the terrace. We were encouraged to harvest anything we chose in the garden, and my apple was delicious. We left with the relaxed sensation of having enjoyed a whole weekend there, instead of simply one night. Additional future events have already been noted and we will return. The hotel is also very close to York Racecourse.

Breakfast was okay apart from eggs not cooked properly. Poached eggs were hard. The silver teapot tea were is okay apart from they are old and not pouring properly.

There is a set menu for an evening meal which does not change having been there for three days. One would be totally bored with the choice of food at an expensive price. It meant we had to travel out of the hotel to have a change of menu.
