Nanzenji Sando Kikusui was a sweet dream!!! The location was away from tourists and crowds but conveniently only a few minutes walk to the local train station. The property was absolutely beautiful! Everything was very clean and had a gorgeous, meticulously designed garden with a koi pond. Being in that garden was like a vacation by itself! Our spa room was the largest room and had plenty of space for our family of four. The beds were super comfortable and spacious! The bedroom was large enough to have a sitting area and room for two very comfortable floor mattresses. The amenities were very generous and simply amazing! There was an abundance of complimentary champagne, alcoholic beverages, coffee, tea, water, juices, and yummy snacks. The best part of the room was the spa bathing area! There was a sauna, sitting bath/pool, shower, and private onsen accompanied by a remote controlled shutter to the outside! The bathing amenities were amazing! We enjoyed the facial items the most. There were beautiful changing robes for use as well. The room also a CD player creating a serene ambiance of lovely piano music that can be heard throughout the room. We had the included breakfast with a choice of Japanese or American cuisine. We tried both types of breakfast, and they were plentiful and delicious! There’s also an option for dinner, but we chose to try the different Kyoto restaurants instead. The best part of the resort was the staff! They greeted you at the entryway every time we arrived and left. The entire staff was friendly, welcoming, accommodating, flexible, helpful, and hard working. We were so sad to leave because we felt like they were our family at the end of our perfect five nights stay. I would return to Japan just to stay at Nanzenji Sando Kikusui!!! We all loved this oasis and highly recommend staying here if you want to splurge!

The hotel is quiet, staff is very friendly as expected for Japanese hospitality standards. There were babies crying during dinner, but this is obviously not the hotel's fault. I'm not sure if the etiquette of a traditional ryokan allows for children. Normally this is ok, but the place is super silent... that's the vibe - so when a baby cries, things get loud (note: I am a father of two toddlers).
To be fair on the ratings above, the room is very clean! What's not as clean is the lobby and halls area. This was supposed to be a traditional ryokan.... why not have guests take off their shoes for example? The food was good for dinner, but as a traditional ryokan I wasn't expecting to eat italian food... maybe my fault for not checking, but I would never expect this. If you're looking for a traditional japanese experience, this is not the place I'm afraid...
