Iowa House Historic Inn

Breakfast was okay, nothing special. Server seemed impatient, in a hurry to clear dishes. Historic building, some interesting decor...

Room was small, many steps to climb up to top floor. Self-check-in, no contact with staff.

I was surprised to see the spa tub and bath salts. I liked the easy access with my personal code and the communication of such processes. I liked the snack bar and the made fresh breakfast. The room was very comfortable for someone who sleeps hot. The staff was present in the morning and personable.

OMGosh!! This place harkens back to the OG - Bed and Breakfast!! It was personal, comfortable (like home away from home). Nice touches, generous touches, everything you would need and want for a comfortable stay that feels homey. Nice upgrades as well as historic charm. I will always stay here when visiting Ames.

Location is great. Place is comfortable. There is no one manning a desk, so if there's a problem or question the only way to contact them is via email and wait for an answer. The room I stayed in was off the kitchen and dining room, so I heard the cook start and continue from 5:30am and people in the dining room at 7am. I was asked for a phone number to respond to whether I was eating breakfast via text, even though I had just asked for a different arrangement via the email they responded to.

I booked through Booking.com, and as a result, my room was changed from a King to a Queen for what reason I don't know. A friend stayed with me for the second night, so this was a little tight. I asked to use both my free breakfasts for the morning my friend was there, but was told rather curtly that I would have to pay cash (to whom?) or provide another credit card. In an email, I was told that because I booked through a third-party service the rooms could be changed and they didn't need to make any accommodation for my friend's breakfast, even though I didn't eat breakfast the first day. Not great customer service, but since I never encountered any staff, I didn't get any clearer explanation.
