Everything .. the staff are lovely, helpful and very friendly.. professional.. kind and easy to interact with...and it started with the friendly person at the guardhouse.. right up to The story telling at dinner was amazing.. well spun.. Jessica is a credit to your wonderful staff. Rooms are lovely, warm and snuggly. Our room had the view of the Harbour entry. BED was very comfortable. We loved our stay.. Trust the chief 4 course meal was tasty, if you are not use to course meals, which means it's not like your local steak and salad chips kinda of dinner.. I recommend having a full lunch during the day in the ballroom Cafe, we had scones with an Easter blended tea (so delicious) we tried the pork and kumura pie (perfect)..at dinner we tried their NZ wine, we had a rosè and it was so nice we brought 2 bottles.. it was a great night.. the music room located in the castle.. . its stunning to sit in there and drink wine eat dinner.. we met a lovely couple who was seated next to us.. from Poland and Indian coming from Australia.. topped our night with wonderful conversation. But everyone who attended the dinner was in great spirts.. we all connected, and thats a credit to introducing ourselves in our group gathering pre-drinks before dinner.. The next morning we had breakfast in the "stable" that was a great surprise...it sets the ambience... breakfast was delicious and such a variety and they can accommodate all kinds of dietary requirements. We visited the castle week after Easter weekend....so end of autumn, beginning of winter.. and gardens are still lovely.. but visiting in spring would be amazing to see it all in full bloom.. but there is also something lovely about multiple colored trees amongst the ever greens and the native birds singing a treat in a fresh Otago chilling air.. we absolutely recommend this place.. 👌 my husband loved it all.. ❤️ side note the Ashley n Co handwash, body wash, shampoo and condition smell divine..
It's not that its a dislike.. but maybe any earlier check in.. but there was plenty to do till then.. so it's not really a big deal...

Excellent and unique location within New Zealand's only castle. The added bonus of included entry to the castle and gardens was great. We took the opportunity to dine in the castle on our first night, which was another unique experience and an opportunity to meet other guests and enjoy a mini tour giving us some background to the castle and the family which built it and restored it. A lovely location, well worth a visit.
The lighting in our room could have been a little brighter and parking in the stable yard can be a little difficult, but that's all!

Gardens and view stunning . The dinner was superb, the staff friendly and helpful
Check in was 3 pm . We went to lodge to check in but no one was there . We enquired at gift shop and they called someone . Computer was not turned on, check in process took a while and by that time 4 other couples had turned up . Considering the last entry to castle is at 5 , if you say check in is at 3, you should be there ready to go . Also instructions for dinner said to go to castle and ring the bell but a sign at the bottom of the steps said to go to gift shop. Gift shop was closed . Not a big deal but it was raining so it was annoying toing and froing

Especially liked the dinner available in the castle and that you can wander around the grounds and castle after hours.
Bed was a little soft, and the room was quite warm. Everything else was perfect.

Excellent breakfast fantastic grounds, small basic room but fine.
Duvet more in keeping somewhere to hang clothes like a hook behind rafter.

We had 2 room types - one at the Lodge and one in the Stables. All the rooms were beautiful and the rooms in the lodge had stunning rooms and beautiful bathrooms with excellent shower facilities. Views from the rooms were spectacular especially when the mist came in - it was literally staying in the clouds.
The rooms at the stables had shared bathrooms but there were enough cubicles so there was no situation of long queues. The refrigerators were well stocked with milk for coffee and tea. Rooms at the stable gave the vibe of living in an attic.
The chef's dinner is a nice touch and I do recommend to add that to your stay. As we went out the next 2 days, we didn't have a chance to try the afternoon tea.
A good breakfast spread - eggs, bread, bacons, cereals, yoghurt and fruits. The gardens are beautiful with little nooks for you to sit an enjoy nature. Because you stay here, you get to explore the main castle without any additional charge.
Was really disappointed with the garden bit where the reflection pool was as it was not maintained. The pool had dead leaves and algae and the water was murky so couldn't take the signature reflection pool pictures. The staff were not unfriendly but they were not very approachable - it almost felt like I was at Downtown Abbey and talking to Mr Carson and having to mind my Ps and Qs.

The castle is beautiful, the rooms were great and the dinner and breakfast were fantastic.
Unfortunately it was raining and very misty so we didn't get to enjoy the garden or views. No fault of the hotels.

The view was outstanding from the room and the grounds were lovely. Very interesting to go through the castle. One of the staff members took us for a walk and gave us some history after dinner which was enjoyable.
The room could use an update. The bed was appalling, with inner springs in my back all night. Some of the staff were not as welcoming as other properties I had stayed at. The dinner was fairly average, although there was lots of it. Given it was in a beautful historic room in the castle, I expected a bit more of a fan fare. The breakfast room was beautiful but unfortunately the breakfast itself was poor. Given the cost per night, it fell quite a bit below expectations (except for the view and location).

We loved the meal in the evening at the Castle. It was a great experience and we met some lovely people. We also enjoyed the very full and delicious breakfast.
We thought the common area in the Stables would be better with more comfortable sofas.
