We knew we would love this place when two little chickens met us at our car. Close to 3 great grocery stores and 2 restaurants we frequented a lot. So close to downtown that we found it easier to Uber than drive and park. No pay channels so we brought our IPad and watched movies on that. Thanks for a great stay!

The carriage house location is perfect for walking to Downtown Asheville, grocery stores, UNC tailgate, neighborhood restaurants, historic cemetery, and parks. I loved the quiet neighborhood and the glorious sound of birds. It’s a quick ride to the Riverfront Arts District and other neighboring communities. Also easy ride to Blue Ridge Parkway and NC Arboretum. Our Asheville adventure was wonderful with the carriage house and it’s perfect location contributing to that experience.

We loved our stay. The hone us furnished well and very comfortable. It was private and close to all that Asheville has to offer. The only drawback was the narrow entrance to the place from the alley. Otherwise it would have rated a 5.

The carriage house is a perfectly sized space for friends or couples, with a separate entrance to the second bedroom/bathroom. It’s in walking distance to everything. I thoroughly enjoyed being there.

The adorable house is nestled in an alley in a safe and gorgeous area. The historic homes are breathtaking!
You can right right out the door just a block or so to a paved trail that loops up through UNC. Perfect!
The owner is warm and friendly and has wonderful communication.

This is a cozy, comfortable and charming cottage located in a beautiful neighborhood that is perfect for daily walks. Walking distance to neighborhood and downtown restaurants and to Harris Teeter's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods! Great access to everything Asheville! The Visitor's Center is a wonderful resource.

We enjoyed staying at this updated carriage conveniently located in Montfort. It was within walking distance of grocery stores (3), restaurants, downtown, and the visitors center. There was off street parking and our landlord was extremely responsive to our needs. We would definitely stay again. There is a ground level bedroom and on suite bathroom with another upstairs. Stairs were not a problem for us. The neighborhood is very quiet and we slept well.

First time in Asheville, loved it!
Great location!
Dog allowed👍🏻
Accidentally got home with the small white towel-bath mat from the lower level in my laundry basket… sorry!

Light-filled carriage house with lots of character.
This charming and well-appointed carriage house checked off most of my boxes including proximity to downtown, within walking distance of Trader Joe’s, and location in an established, walkable neighborhood. The windows surrounding the main living space let in an abundance of light throughout the day from early morning on. I especially loved taking in the gorgeous sunsets from the kitchen windows. A few friends and relatives visited while I was there and they enjoyed all of these wonderful features too.

Great location
Ideally located in Montford, cozy property with two bedrooms, one on each floor. Well supplied kitchen, and the washer/dryer are extra helpful. Owner is next door, and available if you need him, but you've got a big hedge between properties, so you don't feel on top of each other. As others have noted, the driveway is very tight; even in a Honda Fit we had to be careful getting in and out past the stone walls.

I couldn't have asked for anything more with this property. It's exactly as posted and was definitely what I needed for a getaway. I used this as a space for exploring the area with my dog, for visiting family in TN, and for gathering a few friends together after the long year of covid.
As a single woman, I was totally comfortable in the place and in the neighborhood - everyone is wonderfully friendly but not intrusive. There was plenty of space for guests, as well.
The neighborhood is ideal. There are a couple of restaurants and coffee shops in close walking distance, but this is more of a residential and not touristy neighborhood. That helps keep it nice and cozy quiet, but, yet, downtown Asheville bustling with activity is an easy walk away.
This stay made me realize that I'd like to spend more time in Asheville, and I hope to return soon!

Secret carriage house down a European-inspired alley
We spent one month in the carriage house and enjoyed every moment. The house is tucked away down a narrow, flower-filled alley. It's super quiet (just some bird song to compliment your morning and evening), yet super convenient to downtown Asheville and the greater Montford neighborhood. You will need a car to see all of Asheville and the surrounding towns, but most amenities are within walking distance to the house (3 grocery stores, a cute cafe, cocktail bar, restaurants). The layout of the house was great for working from home, as there is wifi access on the patios and 2 bedrooms comfortable for separate Zoom calls. The house has all the basics, plus charm - we had want for little more.
We'd definitely consider staying again.

A bit of sunshine during turbulent times
It is a wonderful thing to be able to call a place a "home away from home." This is one of those places. My wife and I came to Asheville to become familiar with the local culture and to see if it might become our future home. The cottage was a very cheery and comfortable, 2-story structure located in the heart of the historic Montford district. It is a great location from which to experience Asheville. Within walking distance is downtown, local parks, restaurants and all the charm of the area. When relaxing at the cottage, you can watch the birds and squirrels in the lush trees surrounding the property. The cottage itself has a great deck and the downstairs area has a nice little patio for reading and relaxing. All of this became more important during the time of "stay at home" and "shelter in."
Since our stay was during this time, the necessity to be able to cook meals and work from the cottage was important. The small but efficient kitchen served our needs well and WiFi was plentiful. Our host was able to help us with local contacts and where best to shop.
Overall, this cottage is a most pleasant place to stay. I would highly recommend staying here no matter the length of your visit.

Asheville at the Carriage House
We enjoyed our stay at the charming carriage house on Cumberland Alley. It was comfy with wonderful outside spaces to enjoy the cool mornings. All was as portrayed on line. The owner and the neighbors were friendly. Asheville was as fun as it always is! Definitely I would recommend it.

Life in the alley. A beautiful alley. Our blog has many beautiful photos taken in the alley.
The location, house, furniture and accessories make this home charming and relaxing. It has some missing closets and kitchen storage but who cares it just makes you feel like settling in for a long winter's nap. But spring is beautiful in Asheville so your world is beautiful inside and outside. We hope to return for another beautiful experience.

A Home away from Home
My husband and I wanted to visit Asheville in the off season, for several months, to check out the climate and Historic Montford. This location offers quick access to the highway, yet is an easy walk to downtown. A nice quiet place with plenty of room and all that you need for a short or long stay. We were able to explore the surrounding areas of Asheville and the weather was fantastic!

The Perfect Place
This was a wonderful home to spend the last six weeks in! It has everything you need, and is in a great location, within easy walking distance to everything to eat, drink, and see downtown. (Check out Chiesa, just down the street, if you’re in the mood for good Italian food.) Michael was a great host. I would recommend it to anyone, and will likely be back myself!

Although a small property, very well laid out.
Access was appreciated to the city so close by. We didn't have much time to partake of the local atmosphere, we were not here to enjoy ourselves. We were residents of Wilmington, and were here to avoid a hurricane. Although small it delivered all the comforts of home. Grocery stores were close by and down town, entertainment was Great. Interaction with Mr McDonough was excellent. We had a great time. Wish you good luck in your searches but this was a jewel.

Perfect Asheville Getaway
The Carriage House (CH) was perfect for us. We were there for two weeks in September. One couple had the upstairs bedroom with the living room, kitchen, bathroom and TV. We had the downstairs bedroom with the privacy. Two bathrooms really made a difference with a group of four. The hosts were friendly, helpful, and generous. We didn't see a lot of them as they left us to ourselves, which we prefer, but we knew we could reach them at any time through the VRBO website or text. A nice manual was left with hints about the WIFI, TV, parking, eating - all kinds of things. Meals on the second story deck are like eating in a tree house. Having an in-house stackable washer and dryer also made the trip so much easier. The fun, active, good-eats downtown is walking distance if you can do 6-8 blocks, and there were a couple of cafes much closer for lattes and snacks. We liked Tod's Tasties. Also the grocery store and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are all about a mile away. We had a sweet time there!

Excellent Home Away from Home
We reserved the Carriage House for 3 months and liked it so much that we extended our stay for two more months. The location is excellent for taking in all Asheville has to offer. We hardly used our car because we could walk everywhere. Michael and Lisa gave us the privacy and independence we wanted but were available when we needed them. We became very attached to their dog, JJ, and even took him on our walks. All in all a very comfortable stay. We'll be back.

Carriage House in great location
The carriage house is an excellent choice in historic Montford, a short walk to downtown. Michael did a good job making the early 1900's house into a rental. The 2 bedrooms and living/dining room are spacious but the 2 bathrooms and the kitchen are small as you would expect from that era. Everything worked and did not require owner maintenance/repair. He also nicely allowed us to have a daily paper delivered to his driveway on Montford Ave. Be very careful of the carriage house driveway on Cumberland Alley if you have a larger car like an suv. The Alley is a narrow single lane and the driveway is also very narrow (probably made for smaller vehicles of course) and flanked by a stone wall on both sides. Despite always going very slowly we scraped our car. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay and recommend the carriage house.

Wonderful Montford Carriage House
I so enjoyed the nearly two months that I stayed at this charming carriage house. It really felt like home. The layout of the apartment was carefully designed and furniture was a comfortable blend of antique and new pieces. The rental was extremely clean, with a small, but well equipped and very workable kitchen, a very large dining room table for easy entertaining, and super comfortable bed and lovely linens and bedding. I enjoyed the great sunsets from the living room and deck and the vibrant sunrises from the upstairs bedroom. The location was great - easy walk to downtown, Trader Joe's, and a terrific Montford cafe. Would definitely return!

Fantastic Montford perch, cozy and central!
We give this rental unit our highest, enthusiastic recommendation. Easily walkable to downtown Asheville, and with two very different but equally satisfying eateries a block away, the Carriage House is an ideal landing spot from which to sample and immerse yourself in Asheville culture. UNC-Asheville is less than a mile away as well, as are some very fine grocery stores. The house is comfortable and the owners have it well-equipped for short- or long-term visits, If you're bringing work with you, the location itself is a quiet respite, even though minutes from "the scene." Montford is a pleasure to explore on foot, and the neighborhood is friendly -- we always felt safe anytime of day or night. Enjoy!

Charming Carriage House with Perfect Location
The Carriage House was absolutely perfect! My husband and I, along with our two children, stayed for the month of July. The listing description is very accurate. The kitchen is well-equipped with everything you need to cook meals and there are plenty of extra towels and linens. It is also very clean and tastefully decorated. Michael is a very kind and accommodating landlord. The location is the best! We walked downtown often even with our 5 and 6 year old! Very, very convenient location to downtown Asheville yet with privacy! We would definitely stay here again and hope to stay here again in the future! We would recommend the Carriage House to anyone looking for a nice, clean house to rent close to downtown! Loved it!

Great home away from home!
We spent the month of March in Michael's wonderful carriage house. It felt like home for us and we wanted for nothing. The description of the house was perfect and it was all buffed and polished for our arrival. The location is wonderful. Every morning we walked to a neighborhood convenience store for a newspaper. We also walked into downtown Asheville frequently for dinners, lunches, shopping, the symphony and the Home and Garden Show. A large grocery store, Blockbuster video, the University of NC, the Botanic Gardens and any other amenity is only a 5-10 minute car ride away. Michael was a gracious host and helpful with our questions about the area. Even our cat Bella felt right at home! We highly recommend this facility.

Great House, Great Location...
The Carriage House was absolutely wonderful. We truly enjoyed our stay at Michael's property and would stay again if ever we needed to. We used the home for the month of February while we transitioned into the city of Asheville. The location was excellent as we were able to walk into town and walk down to the grocery store. A car was almost unnecessary! I can only imagine the home in the spring as the trees turn green and the grill gets going! Whomever stays next, enjoy!

Wonderful Place to Stay
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful month-long stay here. The cottage was outfitted perfectly. We had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook great meals. We also had plenty of good-quality towels, bed linens, and blankets. I, especially, appreciated the washer/dryer combo (excellent for an extended stay). The location is great, too -- we walked downtown all the time as well as to a great grocery store. Michael was an excellent landlord -- very responsive when we had questions about anything. Highly recommended!
