I requested on the original reservation to either have first-floor or elevator access. I also said that stairs were a problem on the information sheet the hotel sent to me a day prior to arrival. I was told that they may not have read the notes because I was on the second floor with no elevators (apparently they don't have any). They said nothing else was available. Based on this, I could never stay at this hotel again, which is a shame because the rooms are nice and the property is very pretty.

A bad hotel that gets by on the luck of being in a good location (which makes them lazy and arrogant in customer service). I booked a room through Hotels dot com in Apr-2023 to come see the eclipse in Apr-2024. The price was listed and I paid in full at the time of booking. On the day I showed up to check in, they tell me I have an outstanding balance on the reservation, and add another 80 PERCENT to the price. Their lame excuse - “You booked under the old system, and we’re using a new system now.” The truth is they’re lazy and forgot to raise their prices because of the eclipse event, and figured they could just hit me up when I checked in. I even called a month ahead of the eclipse to confirm my reservation, and no mention of the price increase. I’ve just checked ahead on the same booking website for the upcoming major holidays, and zero increased rates. Pure price gouging at the last second.
And when we finally got into our room, the floors were covered in pill bugs, dozens of them. They probably came looking for water and are able to get in through the worn seal around the doorframe. My kids were freaked, and I spent every morning of our stay clearing bugs from the room.
Also - No ice machines anywhere on such a large property, you have to go beg for ice at the front desk (when they’re open); Only one already-used toilet paper roll in the room, go beg for that too if you need more; Our reservation included two rooms, and the air conditioner was broken in one.

Our stay at the Shady Villa Hotel was enjoyable. We spent most of our time in the covered outdoor area. However, the outside lighting on the grounds is poor, so consider bringing a flashlight for walking back to your room after dark.

We were a little skeptical before arriving since this is not the type of hotel we typically stay at. However, we really enjoyed this hotel! It's obvious its an older hotel, but they've done a lot of renovations and it has a nice vibe! There wasn't a restaurant on property (I think it was seasonally closed), but it is within walking distance to a brewery with a few food trucks and a family friendly restaurant/bar. There are not elevators, so be prepared to carry your stuff up a flight of stairs if you get a second floor room. They have a really nice pool area too!

This is a nice out of the way place that is unique in design and recently upgraded. Very cute and peaceful!

The check in was great. We got in right at 10 pm & the desk attendant stayed to take care of it even though they close at 10 pm. We loved the aesthetics of the place and will definitely be back to stay for longer.

Nice little getaway in Salado, Tx!!

Kinda shabby. The clerk who booked is was nice but didn't offer to show us to our room. It was poorly lit and a little scary. The landscapers were there at 8am on a Saturday with 4 leafblowers outside our room...4 leaf blowers. The gentleman who checked us out seemed aggrevated by our presence.

Clean but, Robe had a lighter in it and since the lighter worked, the Robe had not been washed from the last stay. Great hotel other then that, will stay again. Need to upgrade the coffee pots in room.

The only things that I didn't like were the highway noise and trying to figure out where to park.
Room was comfortable

The hotel is lovely. I’d stay again if the room has a microwave & mini fridge.

The grounds were not kept up well. Saw bugs in our rooms. Mosquitos were very bad , other wise we would have relaxed outside a lot more. The coffee pot provided in room sucks. If you are not going to have complimentary coffee, put a nice coffee pot in room.

I stayed for three nights, and the hotel was in general very pleasant and clean. However, I asked for standard cleaning and replacement of towels and sheets and coffee, etc. each day I was there. Each day the hotel failed to clean my room or replace my towels or replace my coffee or empty my trash. After day one I specifically called and requested the service Sunday to, but again it was not performed. When I either called or went to the lobby to ask them to perform the service all I got were excuses. Very disappointing.

This place is adorable and cozy! Front desk person was so lovely. My room is Betty comfy, the extra little details are great. I love this place. Wish i was staying longer than one night.

Check in was easy and the room had great AC and a nice balcony. The rugs had some stains and the shower could have been cleaner. Overall a great stay

Nice clean and quiet room. Restaurant was closed. Pool was closed and in disrepair. Green water. I should have been informed that these advertised amenities were not available. These amenities were reason for choosing this hotel. Dishonest.

This is a good hotel to spend the night if you’re only passing through Salado. I was in the Heritage Oak, and it was a nice suite. Clean. The mattress was much too soft for my liking, and I didn’t sleep well on it. Some people may like their beds soft, but I prefer mine a skosh firmer.
The Stagecoach Restaurant was closed until further notice. The pool looked greenish and dirty. The shower felt nice, but the water was too hot. We tried modulating the temperature several times but water would turn hot anyway. The little downtown area is small and quaint. Not a lot of dining options or much of a night life. As I said, this is a good place only if you’re passing through.

We loved the room, it was very comfy and well decorated. We also liked the walkability to restaurants and shopping. But one of the sole reasons for staying here was the pool. We had all set our hopes on a fun family swim night at the end of our road trip. And instead we sat in a hotel room with nothing to do. Couldn’t even eat on site, because the restaurant is closed as well. Would have been fine with it if the property had just been upfront about this from the beginning! Nowhere did it say or did they say in all the communication that these main draws were unavailable. Felt like we were lied to and sort of forced to stay there.

Convenient location for walking in Salado. The pool is a plus but it does not appear very clean. The room was clean. The property is large and spread out probably making maintenance difficult. Staff was friendly. Overall nice experience.

I've been staying here since 1962. I was glad when reading Bunkhouse purchased the property a few years ago. The food is the same high quality as it has always been. Rooms in parts of the property properly updated and are really nice. I was surprised that the town/restaurant shut down Monday and Tuesday! I had a business dinner appointment and wound up going to Temple for it! I do recommend repairing the original sign out front facing I35, That Would Bring Travelers In!! Work to be done, but glad they are open.

Pool was green and couldn't swim, everything closed down during the holiday, no discount or refund was offered and room never really cooled off

The history of the building is wonderful. However the property did not match. The hotel consist of 6 building and a front area with restaurant.
They redid the buildings around the pool (3). They were newly painted white. There were other building that were brown. They said they would not redo them because of the cost and being close to the highway. I can understand the cost - effect. However I would at least paint them to match the other building - since they are still apart of the property. They need a better grounds keeper - because of the upkeep there were many wasp and dead weeds in the pateos making it difficult to use.
The pool bar is not a bar - it could be - but the staff are young people who lay around on the counters waiting on the next person. We paid over $200 a night, Will not return

The room was beautiful, clean, and huge! We loved it! Price was reasonable, too.

I splurged for the first time to stay somewhere nice for the night.
The internet was out the entire time, I could not get on laptop to complete my work. The AC was out in the dining area which made that experience very unpleasant.
My room was set at 75 and could not adjust it to be cooler.
The lady that checked me in was very nice during check it.
The crew men working around the property were very professional and polite.
At 9am a man knocked on the door saying “ maintenance”. I did NOT open the door. No one had called to inform me someone was coming to my room nor did I call to have maintenance help.
Location is beautiful.

The renovations to the original Stagecoach Inn are very cool and keep with the quirky vibe of Salado. The staff were all kind, helpful and prompt. The rooms were clean and comfortable. I hope the management company continues to make improvements to general maintenance like replacing light bulbs in the stairwells and corridors, picking up trash off the ground all over the property, giant piles of used pool towels and trash in the pool area, and clean patios (less dirt, grime, and dead bug buildup). Part of the charm of Shady Villa is the lush vegetation all over the property, so bugs are to be expected; and the live-and-let-live essence of not over-manicuring everything is appreciated. But maintenance just a bit more on the side of well-cared-for would go a long way. We enjoyed our stay!

Its a beautiful piece of property with lots of history...I had a great time...room was awesome...Place appeared to be under construction/unfinished but im sure when its completed it will be a beautiful place...Tell the groundskeeper to water the damn plants...Place was dry as a bone...but i had a wonderful experience and will definitely recommend the place to others

Dozens of dead (and a few live) bugs ALL OVER the floor! So disgusting

Love the revamped Shady Villa. Really nicely done. Had a great meal in the restaurant, and then lounged by the pool. Mid-century MARVELOUS!

We stayed at Shady Villa, checking in following a massive Texas thunder/hail storm after a busy day of travel, so were just grateful for a safe, quiet place to stay. The rainwater shower and comfy bed were perfect after our tedious, tiring day. While we were unable to take advantage of the pool, the pool area was inviting and looked like a great place to hang out. The hotel is right off of I-35, so you will hear freeway noise, but not with the door closed. Loved the retro vibe, large trees and patio where I enjoyed morning coffee. The hotel is close to Salado restaurants and shops and has its own restaurant on site. Would like to stay again when we have a bit more time to swim and relax and soak up the Salado charm.

Hotel was excellent. How front desk and Expedia treated me after reservation was lost was awful

Super pleasant, loved the outdoor porch with the room. Parking was a little tight with a truck, but the room was beautiful and the town was amazing!

My only complaint is that they will only let you check in early if you pay a fee . We called to see if rooms had been cleaned and we could check in early and even for 30 minutes early it was going to be $50 . I had experienced this in other hotels .

The stay was nice, room was clean and comfortable, front desk attendees were extremely nice and helpful. However, it would have been nice to have a small microwave in the room to reheat leftovers or cold coffee. Also, the little water-heating appliance in the room was a joke. A one-cup keurig-type coffee maker would have been much better. I had to bring my own.

I had a beautiful stay with my mom. Scott at the front desk was awesome. My only complaint is that we didn't stay lo get.
