Well. Maybe not terribly clean but I just needed a room to stay. The check in was great. The staff very friendly. It was a bargain which I loved. I was hoping that it was close to the venue, which was Golden 1 so I had to uber but that was okay. There is no close parking so I just kept feeding the parking meter in front. It was perfect for what I needed.

Beautiful rooms in a large Victorian house. So spacious! No street noise and close to downtown. No onsite parking, but structure around the corner.
3.0
Comfortable room in a great location, but in need of some renovation/repairs. The shower in my room had extremely old, stripped fixtures (the handle came off multiple times in the three times I used it), and the door would not stay on its tracks.

There was no staff onsite for most of my stay. An alarm was going off in the office the entire night, and you could hear it from the room. I got no response to the calls and texts I sent to the urgent phone number. Once a real person arrived onsite in the morning, they were delightful, kind and attentive. But unfortunately the lack of service negatively affected my stay.

Weird hotel. I wanted to like it. Beautiful renovated Victorian.
Horrible experience checking in late. I wasn’t the only one! Lots of people lost looking for their room.
Curtains did not fully cover windows, especially in the bathroom!! Crazy
Shower full of mold and one sink at a double vanity ran al night.
Never again

Arriving at the hotel around 6p and not being able to get in was very disappointing. The hotel reception shuts down at 4p; therefore the hotel mandates you ck in by 4p. Im sorry, Im on vacation and zi set my own schedule, not the hotel!!!

Building was beautiful. Has Old Building Charm!! Floor uneven and creaky, but part of the charm. Bathroom faucet leaked and dripped all the time. Mattress was very old and needs to be replaced.

The Sterling is an OK stay; not bad, but it is not exceptional nor great. The biggest disappointment was the breakfast which does not exist. When I travel with my wife and toddler, I never book without the hotel providing breakfast. NEVER. When I was booking, I made sure to check the breakfast included box and The Sterling listed as providing breakfast. At check-in, the receptionist confirmed our fear: no breakfast. Next, the mattresses were too soft to the point where you sort of sink in. Lastly, the maid was cleaning the room in front of us and slamming doors. My wife kindly asked her to please not slam doors so hard because our sick toddler was sleeping; maid ignored our request. In comparison, I've stayed in far better hotels in the USA and the third-world for half the price. Hope this feedback helps some of you.

I arrived at the hotel and no one is there, and couldn’t check in. I call the emergency number and no one answers and no reply to my message. No response from Expedia either. Never in my life have I ever had such experience. A true disappointment.

It was a great experience with a new technology ( digital key)… but it’s beautiful place

The Sterling is a beautiful location and hotel. This would be a great place to stay for events. Unfortunately, I was in town for work. The wifi signal wasn't the strongest, and there were events going on even on a Tuesday evening, meaning it was a bit awkward to go down and get water. I also had difficulty when I forgot my door code entry for after hours. (The front desk has VERY limited hours).

It was cute, interesting and nostalgic to stay here…. However the decor was very aged, the bathroom definitely needs an update, the jet tub is so 1990… it took up so much of the bathroom it was hard to sit on the toilet…. There were obvious roof leaks leaving huge stains in the ceiling. I get it, it’s old, but at least so repairing should be done.

Quite dated. Front desk receptionists friendly and helpful. Great snacks. Downside, the faucet on sink was strange as it is very close to the rim of sink and backs onto the sink ledge. Toilet handle took some adjustments to get it to work. It was hard to see all the wasted water for a shower waiting for it to warm up. I never had to employ the cold water and settled for a luke cold/warm shower. Even after waiting for 5 minutes, the water was not warm. Within a 5 minute walk to the SAFE credit union convention center.

Worst experience I had at a hotel, the lights would not turn off so they were on all night. Barely got 2 hours a sleep and book a hotel with my wife to get a good night sleep did not get that. I complained the supervisor was supposed to call me back and he never did.

Booked this place for my birthday and I don’t think I’ll be staying here again. I was drawn in by the vintage charm but now that I’m here I would trade in the aesthetic for some up to date amenities. All of the faucets are off centered and leaking. There was a thick layer of gritty cleaning product on the bottom of the bathtub that stuck to my feet so I couldn’t use the huge tub with jets. I considered cleaning it myself for a minute but then why am I paying to stay in a hotel? The furniture is mismatched and broken with a small fridge on the floor and a tiny television. The carpet is coming loose in one corner etc. The staff also leaves at 4:30 so if you need anything..? This place has good reviews so maybe my room just sucked.

Room 300 has a great view of the corner street location.
We did shower or bath as the tub looked like it would leak at various locations. It was also dirty with grime. Not sure the last time it was ever cleaned. The bathroom sink was also cracked. We had o adjust the toilet a few times as it would continually run water.
The room and bed were great.

Wonderful stay! Walking distance to down town. Lovely room and building. Definitely recommending.

Initially had difficulty checking in as my phone firewall prevented the transfer of electronic key. However, staff sent another key and I was able to check in. The location was adjacent to my meeti g site but the overal condition of property is worn and can use some updating. I will continue to stay as the price and convenience outweighs the cosmetics of the location.

This aged hotel was decent but the receptionist didn’t really make an effort to provide us with good customer service or friendliness. Limited parking on the street. The room was large with a coffee maker.

Staff is very friendly and the rooms are large and well appointed .

Excellent privacy, breakfast was convenient—can grab a quick coffee and bagel on the way out.

We stayed at the Sterling hotel because of its proximity to the Golden 1 Center. It was fine! The staff were very nice and the hotel itself was very beautiful.

For the price of the room they at least could have supplied some real glassware and an ice bucket without having to ask for ice. We are adults and should not have to wait for staff to bring ice. Also the toilet handle was loose and finally broke along with a dirty shower floor.

The jacuzzi tub was a dream come true. However, the sound-proofing was non existent! You could hear every single cough, creak, and toilet flush if you are staying on the first 2 floors. For the steep price we paid of $271 for ONE night I was very disappointed. Also theres no parking. You have to pay.

Very cute building, very clean room. Nice size tub. The only fault, it was a different room then what was pictured online.

I loved the house itself, as well as the big tub. There was nothing I didn’t like.

It was real shabby chic and I loved all the decor! There were a few things I felt could’ve been replaced like the toilet seats etc. they were clean just really old ya know?

The building and style was very unique and nice, yet having to wait for staff at the front desk when you need them during hours is a little disappointing. Also our room had a moldy odor and there was a stain on our sheets.

That the trash was picked up at 3:55 on the morning. No fun

Very quick check in, great staff, love the room, very clean and the spa tub was perfect. We will be back to stay often.

Everything was amazing! From the service to the room. I would definitely come back and get another room for sure!

For me, a quiet, neighborhood hotel out of the hustle bustle is perfect. It’s a small, Victorian style building in a mostly residential section of midtown Sacramento. However, there’s plenty of excellent restaurants, venues and activities within walking or very short driving distance. If you’re after a modern hotel with lots of amenities this isn’t for you. But, if you’re ok with a charming, old Victorian, moderately priced, a little chipped paint and not so perfect decor, clean with friendly staff and a good free continental breakfast, this is your spot!

My main criticism is the bathroom was in need of refurbishment. Double jetted tub was cracked in several places. Had to run water for 10 minutes to get hot water to the shower. This was surprising as water supply is a critical concern in CA. Refinish of Porcelain sink was deteriorating. I never have high expectations for "included breakfast". Main disappointment with breakfast was the very low quality jelly packets. I do expect good quality preserves from an establishment like this. That said, this is my only real criticism of the breakfast. I do give them credit for the oatmeal packets which was not instant. This helped to balance out the cut rate jelly.

It's an older hotel, didn't feel safe there. Old fashioned chain locks for door.

Nice and accommodating front desk
