The Ocean Guest House

Very unusual property with lots to look at with weird and wonderful decorations

Breakfast was uncomfortable as we didn’t feel we could ask for more tea, coffee or toast. Landlady was a real character but service was slow

Where to start. The moment you walk in The Ocean Guesthouse is a wonderful soul lifting experience. I admit this was last minute needed to book a room grab anything available booking so I didn't read all the information but woow what a superb find to stumble (or scroll) upon. Maxine and her small team are brilliant, very dedicated and lovely. The decor in every room is unique. Everywhere you look you find an interesting antique to look at or a bit of humour to give you a laugh. The rooms (we were allowed to have a peek at them all as they were being prepped for the next guests) all has their own quirky themes. Everywhere and everything is prestine, clean and absolutely spotless. Breakfast was freshly cooked to our order. Sorry I'm vegan/veggie so can't comment on the local sausages or bacon but they smelt devine. We could not fault a thing in our overnight stay. Oh, bring cash with you as there is an honesty bar for guests to use stocked with a good selection of drinks at sensible prices. Maxine and her team full deserve the write up she got in The Sun that happened to be published the day we arrived. By the way I am not one to write reviews but I think you can tell I really thought Maxine deserves this one.

Absolutely nothing.

The breakfast included was delicious, location was brilliant, staff were all friendly. Maxine is a great host makes the stay fun!

Nothing it was all good

When I arrived I was told that my shower was out of order due to a guest having to be removed from the property by police the night before (which didn’t make me feel very safe). Instead of being offered an alternative room or a discount I was told that another shower would be available and a bathrobe provided- it turned out however that there were 4 flights of stairs between my room and this shower! Not great news after a hike and in a heatwave. When I raised this I was offered a discount, but the way it was handled felt unprofessional: a) I didn’t need to know about the police matter and b) I’d paid for a private bathroom, so I should have been offered some remedy immediately, rather than having to argue for it.
