Staff is incredibly helpful and kind. Paul was a wonderful host! Room was good for an old historic building with a very comfortable bed and nice amenities. Be prepared for steep steps but staff will carry the bags up for you. Miss Pita next door is a great Greek restaurant. On a Friday night the street can be a bit noisy but that's part of the charm of staying in a "real" area and not a sterile modern property.

Steep steps are not for everyone, but we're in our 70's and managed fine.

I have stayed at The Grapes several times, as it is really convenient when attending gigs at the nearby 1865 venue, and very reasonably priced compared with other similar nearby properties. Since my last stay, a remote controlled air conditioning ceiling fan has been added to the room I usually book, which was very welcome in the heat of the summer. My room was very clean, as always, and the extra touches, like complimentary bottled water, biscuits with the tea and coffee, and a selection of toiletries in the en suite, go over and above what is offered in similar properties and are very welcome. The staff are always very friendly and helpful, and I am always offered help with carrying my case up the stairs. The accommodation is above a thriving pub, yet I have never been troubled by noise after closing time, and there is a discount on drinks at the bar for hotel guests - another bonus! I will definitely be staying again.

In a really good location within the Old Town. Very good value, clean and comfortable.

We liked being above the pub and next door to several restaurants on a pedestrian-only street. Also a short walk to the ferry to the Isle of Wight.

The room was very warm (no air conditioning) and the toilet was tricky to operate. Also there were two flights of steep, narrow stairs up to the room, which we were aware of but didn’t like. The pub staff was extremely helpful with helping us carry our baggage up the stairs, though.
