Villa Santa Chiara – A Private Villa in Siena
Villa Santa Chiara is a 17th-century Tuscan property set on a hill just outside Siena's ancient city walls, approximately 15 minutes' walk from Piazza del Campo.
The Villa has been carefully restored and is surrounded by a private garden and approximately five hectares of olive groves. Its position offers an unusual combination: the landscape, space and quiet of the Tuscan countryside, with the historic center of Siena within walking distance.
Guests are the only guests staying at the Villa. We, the owners, live on the property in our own separate private area and are available whenever assistance or local advice is needed.
The three apartments
Guest accommodation consists of three independent apartments: Wine Red, Honey Yellow and Olive Green, each with its own entrance from the garden and only a few steps from the others.
Together they offer 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms, accommodating 14 guests in the bedrooms, with 2 additional single sofa beds for a maximum of 16 guests.
The arrangement works particularly well for extended families and groups travelling together: the apartments provide independent living spaces, while the garden, pool and outdoor areas allow everyone to spend time together.
The three apartments have different layouts, which are described below.
Wine Red
Wine Red is arranged over two floors, connected by internal stairs.
The living/dining area and fully equipped kitchen are on the ground floor. On the first floor there are 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
One double bedroom can be prepared as a twin bedroom upon request.
Honey Yellow
Honey Yellow, the largest apartment, is arranged over three floors — ground floor, first floor and second floor — connected by internal stairs.
The living/dining area and fully equipped kitchen are on the ground floor. The sleeping area occupies the first and second floors, with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in total.
There is also a single sofa bed for one additional guest.
One double bedroom can be prepared as a twin bedroom upon request.
Please note that one bedroom is on the second floor. Its bathroom is not ensuite and is reached through the living area.
Olive Green
Olive Green has a different layout. Its entrance is reached from the garden by an external stone staircase of 12 steps.
Once inside, the apartment is entirely on one level, with a living/dining area, fully equipped kitchen, 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
There is also a single sofa bed for one additional guest, and one double bedroom can be prepared as a twin bedroom upon request.
Garden, pool and outdoor living
The apartments have direct access to the garden or are reached directly from it, with lawns, flowers, Mediterranean plants and olive trees.
When the entire Villa is booked, a large veranda provides a shared dining area where the whole group can sit around the same table. A fully equipped BBQ is also available.
The swimming pool is open from May 15 to September 30. It is primarily for guests, although we, the owners, may occasionally use it as well. Our own living area is separate from the guest accommodation and private.
The sauna and heated spa are open from November 1 to April 30. The cold spa is open from May 15 to September 30.
And yes, there are also our chickens — very much part of life at the Villa.
The estate and the views
Villa Santa Chiara is surrounded by approximately five hectares of land with some 500 olive trees, from which we produce our own organic extra-virgin olive oil. Our olive oil is also available for guests to purchase.
From the property, the view to the south extends across the Crete Senesi and Val d'Orcia towards Mount Amiata. To the north is the Siena skyline, including Porta Romana, the Basilica dei Servi, Torre del Mangia and the ancient city walls.
The setting is remarkably quiet considering its proximity to the city. One of the pleasures of staying here is returning on foot after dinner in Siena to the silence of the garden and the Tuscan night sky.
Siena and the surrounding countryside
One of the historic gates into Siena is a few minutes away on foot, while Piazza del Campo is approximately a 15-minute walk from the Villa.
Siena's museums, churches, restaurants, cafés, shops and wine bars can therefore be reached without a car.
For exploring further afield, the Villa is also well positioned for the Chianti region, the Crete Senesi, Val d'Orcia, wineries and historic Tuscan villages.

We live at Villa Santa Chiara and are happy to assist with restaurant recommendations, practical arrangements and suggestions for exploring Siena and the surrounding area.
Upon request, we can arrange private dinners at the Villa, cooking experiences, wine tastings, truffle hunting and other local activities.
Claudia, Anna's elder daughter, is a licensed professional tour guide for Siena and the surrounding area and is available for private guided visits.

THE VILLA IS SO GOOD - don't even think twice. Rent this place. You'll love it.SO.GOOD.The pictures and descriptions made the Villa sound amazing -- and there is always that concern that when you get there it won't be as good as you've been led to believe. The reality of the Villa was even better than the listing.We were there with a large group of family and friends and rented the entire place. The rooms and individual apartments were great. There was plenty of group/common area outside for all of us to gather -- a few groupings of outdoor furniture.The pool was FANTASTIC -- just perfect, with an amazing view. We were there during a heat wave and the pool was a godsend, with an amazing view.There is a new outdoor kitchen/dining area (indoors, but all the walls slide open so it can be outdoors) that we ate in a couple of times.Mario was in constant communication with us during our stay.The villa is a short walk to the Porta Romana entrance to the old walled part of Siena, albeit up a steep hill.Loved it.

Villa Santa Chiara is a beautiful property in a stunning location just minutes from Siena's historic center. Anna and Mario are exceptional hosts — responsive and helpful throughout the booking process and during our stay. They assisted us in arranging a private chef for two memorable dinners with outstanding wine pairings, helped coordinate transportation, and even located a dentist for one of our guests in a pinch. Anna also gave us a warm tour of the property and her family's vineyard and olive oil history.The property itself is stunning. Views from the pool over the Tuscan countryside are breathtaking, the veranda is ideal for group meals, and the fire pit area is lovely for evenings together.Note for prospective renters: Anna and her family live on the property and share some amenities and grounds. She was upfront about this when asked prior to booking — just worth knowing if full privacy is important to your group.Note for Americans: 'first floor' means one floor above ground level. All bedrooms require climbing stairs.Pro tip: the path behind the local grocery store leads directly up to Siena's historic center — Google Maps doesn't show it, but it avoids a road with no sidewalk.Overall a memorable stay in a spectacular setting with genuinely caring hosts.

We have visited Tuscany several times, this time as a family of ten including four children under 11. The three separate apartments worked very well. Common area at the pool and on the side lawn provided space for play and happy hour. The hosts were on site and very responsive to questions and offered helpful suggestions for sites to visit. I suggest you plan your vacation time in Siena around availability here!

The property was listed as private and aside from Anna and her husband living in the property we would be the only guests. However, there were many people coming up and down the driveway and staying in places on the property. We had little children playing and had to be aware of the cars and mopeds coming in and out of the property. We were shown an outdoor kitchen and grill that we could use and when we went to make breakfast the host was in it cooking and shooed us away from the door. We were accused of not giving a remote to the gate back but we had never received it when we were pulling away Anna found it in her apartment. It was a great location near the city center and large enough to accommodate our family but wasn’t a 10/10 for sure.
