Great location - 10 min walk to centre, 10 minute walk to Funicular to Citti Alta. Fabulous communication from Emy and lovely homely and spacious accommodation.
It was great

This is a classic Italian apartment of some age and character, with two bedrooms, two baths, and a separate kitchen in which we whipped up some leftovers into a nice dinner. Classic stairs and slow elevator, too, everything working fine. Just outside the front door is La Coquette, a very nice, woman-run local-clientele cafe with great coffee, a large selection of cooked breakfasts as well as fine local baked goods. The building is at the intersection of Via Verdi, a modern thorofare with easy access to transit, and Via Pignolo, an ancient winding street with lots of history and interest. Plenty of dining thereabouts, too. The city is fascinating on all levels: the Citta Bassa has plenty of interest for fans of fascist architecture, the Citta Alta is loaded with ancient winding streets, interesting churches, and fun shopping, and the San Vigilio neighborhood (a sort of Citta "really Alta" above Citta Alta) boasts a Castle with 360 views of the Alps and Milan. Two separate funiculars get you to the Alta and Castle levels, which is fun in itself. We liked having a spritz + buffet lunch at Fuoriporta House Bar at the base of the higher funicular and watching the funicular come and go. We also enjoyed the long but picturesque walk back from San Vigilio down a series of alleys & stairs and then a winding road back to the upper funicular past beautiful villas with spectacular views. The Accademia Carrara had a lovely collection of medieval, renaissance, and later paintings and sculptures, wonderfully displayed, and the Venetian gates and walls were impressive. Tasty food at the Caffe Del Tasso 1476 in the Piazza Antica beside the Duomo (and fascinating Meridian, nearby), but also at the wacky and wonderful Trattoria D'Ambrosio Da Giuliana on Via Broseta, where you get local food at a great price in a fun setting, including a set of dancing marionettes.
Not the most comfortable double bed, so we switched to the twins in the next room. Also no A/C, with just an oscillating fan on a chair (and the fan we brought ourselves) and several open windows to help us deal with the heat wave. Pro tip: the most direct route from the train station that Google Maps suggested was (once again) not as easy to negotiate with our suitcases as the slightly longer but more orthogonal route with smoother, straighter streets along Via Papa Giovanni XXIII and Via Petrarcha/Via Verdi.
