I liked that I could walk into the centre of Lucca in about 15-20 minutes. It has easy access to the walls, which makes a lovely walk. Lucca is a beautiful city and I would highly recommend the area. There is lots to see and do. Public transport is very cheap and easy to access. As a single woman, I felt very safe wandering around on my own and I encountered no unwelcome attention. I did like the shutters over the windows, they were very effective at blocking out the sunlight. The air conditioning unit kept the apartment lovely and cool in the heat. Generally the host was responsive to requests for help. Sometimes messages were answered more quickly than others.

Having to find the location on my own in the dark. The location of the keys was in a different place to the location of the property. The fact that no-one would come and meet me after 8 o’clock at night. I had been told that taxis would be waiting outside the train station, but there were none. When I phoned for one, I was informed that they were very busy and it could take up to an hour. I decided to walk instead. Be aware that the light is on a timer. Locate the switch to turn it back on before you let it go off. There is a metal gate to the building which slams shut with a loud clash every time someone enters and leaves the building. There is very little soundproofing between the different flats so that I could hear chairs being scraped on the floor above and drawers opening and closing. The property is near to one of the arches through the walls, where traffic passes day and night, plus there is a road next to the apartment that leads to another road that is in regular use. Motorbikes are particularly noisy. So, although the property is inside the walls, it is not free from traffic noise. The TV is on the wall in the bedroom. I would have preferred it in the living room area. There were no side tables. The dining chairs were made out of hard plastic with metal frames, that folded up. These were uncomfortable. Fridge is not functioning properly. The ice box is broken so that the whole of the fridge is too cold. Glasses of water turned to ice. The dishwasher is very small. There is no oven. There is a tiny grill the size of a toaster. However I found that it only dries the bread rather than toasts it. There is a gas hob but the extractor fan is not working, so the windows had to be open to let out the fumes.
