Toodyay Art Shack on Avon River - Finalista degli Stayz Holiday Home Awards 2019

Vengono fornite lenzuola, coprimaterassi, trapunte, cuscini, tovaglie e strofinacci.

This place is different and we expect that. Whilst we knew the house was quite open with lots of air flow we didn't expect that there would be literally open to the elements with no fly screens to stop the bugs, insects and even frogs coming inside. We were covered in mozzie bites by the time we left!
You can tell the place is designed by an architect as it is not functional or practical for living, example being the stairs do not have a landing and literally end at the door which means you have to lean over to open the sliding door, there are no draws in the kitchen so the cutlery is on a table and the cupboards are so high you can barely reach the cups in them, the lighting creates a mood but you can't see what you are doing while cooking. Toilets are accessed on the outside of the building, not inside. Would suggest a small step stool so people can reach items in cupboards and decent knife in the kitchen wouldn't go a stray. The place is quirky and I get the charm, but it is not for everyone!

Not suitable (safe) for elderly or kids. Weird design, dusty, noisy (trains going all night, hooting at 1am). Inside shower difficult to get into, outside shower too cold at this time of the year. Both toilets outside??? Bugs everywhere, some windows not sealed, no window coverings, no privacy. On a positive note - we loved the choice of books and the record player.

Intriguing house.
Loved my stay. House was so different. Fires were essential as it was so cold. We all got involved in keeping the fires going. A team effort.
Close to the town and the river. The dogs loved wandering down to the river and swimming.

Rooms with a View
Great place to stay with excellent use of design to accentuate the beautiful setting of the house. Stacks of room and great ability to separate activities for multiple guests. Will definitely return to this one.

This eclectic arty house was just the ticket for us. Lived in too many ‘heritage’ houses to know we wanted something different for our stay in the Avon Valley. Exciting to explore all the nooks and crannies of this eccentric property. It was a hot weekend and the airflow through the open plan spaces was perfect. Loved looking through the extensive LP collection. The massive fridge is awesome. Every appliance including coffee machine and grinder was most welcome. Highly recommend this property for artistic and creative types.

Paul's place in Toodyay is novel - unlike anywhere we have stayed before but we loved it. A tad chilly as it was winter but plenty of fire's and heaters - would be amazing to go back in summer! Great location and has everything you need.

Once we negotiated the unexpected entrance (front door opens onto steps - just pull it all the way across, and in you go), first impressions were excellent. It's a creative space, filled with interesting bits and bobs, and nooks that welcome you to lie down and read, or just gaze at the trees. We loved playing the records, and enjoyed the challenge of lighting our own fires.
There are lovely walks to be had right behind the property. Views are wonderful, especially from the central living area, with its massive glass doors that open to create a gorgeous, open space. The quiet and the lack of light pollution make for a good sleep, and excellent stargazing.
Neighbouring properties do overlook, and there aren't curtains or blinds on certain crucial windows, so you need to muster your inner bohemian before showering. Perhaps you could hang a sarong if you are shy!?
Paul answered all our questions and looked after us well in the lead-up to our holiday. I love what you are doing with the property, Paul; thank you for sharing it.

e were expecting quirky, and we knew not all the sleeping spaces had doors, but we were not expecting the complete lack of privacy in this house.
There are neighbours close by on both sides and a track with the odd car going past at the back of the property. The property has no blinds / curtains, even in the bathroom. Questionable as to whether you can call the bathroom “a room” anyway as the walls don’t go right up to roof and there is a big open space without a window pane. Anyone can see in and it was freezing cold when going to the loo / having a shower. You have to go outside to access this bathroom, and the door (which opens onto the front veranda) has a gap down the full length of the door that looks like it should have a pane of glass in it. The front door to the main house is the same which doesn’t feel secure at all - looks like someone with a thin arm could reach through and unlock the door from the outside.
You also have to go outside to access the second toilet (no cover from door to toilet door so not fun in the rain )and this has a full length glass door, so no privacy there either.
The upstairs consists of closed off sleeping areas around an open area. This maybe be nice in summer but not so much in wet stormy weather. Some of these beds are just foam mattresses placed on top of built in cabinets.
The stairs to the upstairs are steep with single handrail - not safe for little kids who could fall off the edge of the steps onto the concrete floor below.
The house looks stunning on the site. We go away a lot and this is the first time we’ve experienced such a difference between what is depicted and what you get. Suggest the owners include photos of the less appealing aspects of the house and let people make an informed decision regarding whether this property is suitable for them.
We found it disappointing and totally overpriced.

Funky Art Shack
We had a group of 6 stay at Toodyay. The place was well equipped and had everything we needed. It is located close to town and river. The design is unusual but worked well for our group. An excellent place to stay.

This house was the perfect base for our family mountain biking weekend. The incredible provided a well needed sun trap for a late winter retreat, with glass walls that opened onto the sweeping river vistas. The perfect place to relax and chill out, with plenty of edgy artworks to keep the senses alive. Would highly recommend this to those seeking an alternative to typical holiday retreats - will definitely return with a larger group.

Great architecture
Great getaway so close. Cosy fires for the winter, though the home is so well designed it wasn't cold. Perfect spaces for reading. Great record collection. Walking distance to the town, beautiful town.

UNIQUELY BRILLIANT. BRILLIANTLY UNIQUE
A long weekend getaway with our 9 month old was made very special by the very special experience of existing in this house for three nights. Don't be fooled by the shack title - this is a brilliantly appointed and designed house that is perfect for a break with a difference. The architecture is super quirky and smart - we've never felt more connected to the landscape in a house. Favourite elements included the sleeping nook in the kitchen / living area, the huge plate glass window walls that slide open and disappear - transforming the main living space, upstairs in the vista room for sunset and the amazing shower attached to the master bedroom with its views of the valley. We drove to York to visit an antique fair, went for long walks along the Avon, explored the charms of Toodyay and took other scenic drives. It was a delight to return to this marvellously strange structure after each ramble. All in all one of our favourite weekend getaways. Recommended.

Escape in Toodyay, from the ratrace and convention
I did not want to write a favourable review so we could keep this place secret and to ourselves. A handy distance from town the shack sits atop of the Avon river (there are some elements of a shack but this place is not a shack) with some great views of the Toodyay countryside. We especially enjoyed the quirky but thoughtful little touches around the house, and we kept finding new surprises up until we left. A large vinyl collection and record player kept us completely amused on the first night. Discussion on the house architecture and random artwork kept us guessing on the second. I don't write many reviews but felt compelled to share this unique and enjoyable experience, we thoroughly recommend.
