Stay was exactly as I expected. Clean, comfortable and quiet. The owner was very nice at check in and around the property during my stay. Would definitely stay here again. This was not my first time at the Pelican

I really liked this little inn; close to everything, right on “hotel row,” and really reasonable price. Great check in, super-friendly staff, very efficient; it’s a bit shabby, could REALLY use a paint job, but overall really enjoyable; the only downsides: the room heater is old and extremely loud, so much so, that I couldn’t leave it on while sleeping. So, if it’s really cold, good luck. The only other thing, the flooring is extremely uneven, the room is carpeted, so I’d do something to even out the floor; but for a budget stay, it was excellent…

The staff is friendly but the room was unsatisfactory. The water pressure is low and water temp does not get hot-stays warm.
The pillowcase had blood on it and the heater had a strong odor that filled the room so we had to just turn the heat off.
My towel had a hole in it.
Otherwise, the bed was comfortable, sheets were clean.

The motel room was pleasant, and nicely decorated. We've stayed here 2 or 3 times before. The microwave oven was dirty, and covered with fingerprints on the outside, and encrusted food on the inside. We left the plate out, for housekeeping to notice.
Check-in was unpleasant. The manager/owner(?)/clerk was polite on the surface, but treated us with irrational suspicion. He took my ID and credit card through a window from the outside, and disappeared to another area for around 10 minutes. I had the feeling that he was trying to verify our identities? I can't even imagine why; the room was pre-paid, and we were repeat guests. We had paid in advance with my husband's credit card (same surname and address), but he demanded to have my credit card, which he turned over several times, remarking even that the magnetic stripe was compromised and that "some people do that on purpose". (It was because of that scratched stripe that we paid with my husband's card.)
I've never been looked at so suspiciously by a motel clerk (or anyone in the service industry for that matter) for a prepaid service. I understand this happens to black and brown people more than for someone like me... but honestly, no one who is polite and responsive at a point of service should be made to feel so unwelcome. We will not stay there again. Monterey is known for being a tourist friendly place. I should know, because I'd grown up there, and return and visit frequently for family and other business.

Front desk person(sorry I can't remember her name) was extremely kind and helpful. I had called before to make a couple requests and she went out of her way to accommodate me. Room was clean and appliances worked great. Ice machine near by. Nothing fancy but suited my needs perfectly

The Pelican Inn is my go to Motel when visiting my son at CSUMB. Small Quaint motel with everything you need. Rooms are spacious, bathrooms are large, property is quiet, and the couple that run it are the friendliest I've come across in the area. Very personable and inviting. They always remember me and go out of their way to make me and my family comfortable. It would be nice if they added coffee in the lobby or individual pots in the rooms. But overall The Pelican Inn is outstanding.

Staff was very friendly and helpful, overall a good experience. Room was clean though older feel to the place...but fine for my single night. Close and safe enough to walk to fishermans wharf so got to enjoy the nearby area without having to drive.

Shower didnt really work like a water bottle getting poured on you, ac unit wouldnt work for hot or cold. Felt rushed to check out. Cleaning came in while in shower

It’s pretty and clean, you can even see the ocean behind the trees from the top floor. It’s across the road from a park, so the view from the windows is nice, you see pine trees. It has a decent sized fridge, which is a big plus, it’s well located within an easy drive to anywhere in Monterey, has a larger bathroom, (though, the water pressure in the shower is low-ish), and even a lit make-up area with a mirror in the bedroom, a very nice touch. The beds are comfortable.
If you don’t mind the road noise you’ll be fine. Everything else is ok, but if you are a light sleeper, keep in mind that the door does not fit right (at least in the room where we stayed, maybe some other rooms are better), you can see light around the edges when the door is closed. We inserted paper towels around the door into the slits to try to seal it at night, but that was not much help. They did put in windows that close tightly, they should do the same with the doors.
Also, they are very inflexible in terms of any refunds - you can cancel with 48 hours prior to arrival, but try to cancel 46 hours prior to arrival and no can do. And, you have to ask to have your room cleaned, they won’t do it otherwise. You can put a "do not disturb" sign on your room to not have it cleaned, but if you don't put that sign, they still won't clean it, unless you go to the front desk and ask for it. They should have a "please clean the room" sign one could put outside the door, to make requesting the cleaning easier.

The AC/heater has no thermostat, it never stops, horrible noise, always too hot or too cold. Staff lied saying the "facility has a thermostat outside the room", which is total BS, there is no thermostat, it's just a cranky old AC/heater with knobs.

Not a brand new or upscale property but the bed was still quite comfortable and the location was very convenient for us. We walked to the wharf for a whale watching tour and it took about 25 min to walk but on the way we stopped at a great cafe (Alta Bakery & Cafe) and got delicious coffee and pastries, which was a perfect start to the day! Also nice big eucalyptus trees next to the property which had tons of little birds in the morning, which we loved because we are birders.

It’s was a cute small place, but when we entered, it smelled of smoke.
Bathroom had hair on the floor and water pressure was really bad.
Over all if you need a quick place to shut eye/ get some rest. This is an ok spot.

The cleaning required a lot more attention to detail then it was given. There were hairs and evidence of the previous stays throughout. It was very dirty and run down room with a bad odor.

I’ve stayed here a couple of times, it is a good price and the staff is kind. The hotel is conveniently close to shopping, and restaurants. This trip will unfortunately be our last, as the heater smelled of pee when in use, so we woke up sick from a freezing room. I take responsibility for not calling in the middle of the night to ask for accommodations for the heater, we just didn’t want to be a bother or repack and move our belongings. We informed the front desk, and asked if they had space heaters. When we were told that Febreze would fix the issue, it was concerning to know that this is what was used to mask the smell for our arrival.

My boyfriend and i really enjoyed the hotel. For the price it was worth it. The only downside was i could hear some kids banging on wall being super loud late into the night. But, i would happily stay again

Was pleased with my stay. If only they could wipe down the microwave and refrigerator area. If you’re down stairs be prepared to hear your upstairs neighbors. But overall it was quiet.

Everything was great before getting dirty ice with dirt in it. Be careful if you have the ice. However the bed was clean which is great but had some stains on the walls and a lot of chipped paint.

If you like smells, great this motel has one, I don’t know what it is but I didn’t like it. Want to see the soles of your feet? Walk around barefoot then stand in the bath and see your complete footprints- the floors are filthy. Don’t need to worry about things sliding from shelves because they’re all sticky. You won’t feel lonely, you can hear people in the rooms around you. You won’t sleep either there’s an electrical thrum and loud whoosh goes on all night, no idea where the noise comes from. Whatever they’re charging for this motel it’s too much.

Room smelled bad, and the bed had sandy particles between the sheets. The space heater had no control knobs sin can’t use the heater. The lights on ether side of the bed had missing light switch so the lights didn’t work. Overall, a very bad experience and will not recommend this place.

I love the bed the bed was great. The bathroom was really dirty and gross. The tub drain would not drain soap and shampoo dispensers gave one drop of soap and shampoo. Very frustrating. Nobody can even wash their hands with one drop TV volume was set to a level that I could not hear.
