Kilmichael House

The location was great only 10 minutes from Loch Ness Urquhart Castle and a short d4ive 20-25 minutes from Fort Augustus. Entry is through the big red door at the front of the property which is l9cked and you will need to ring bell and wait for someone to respond The room was lovely and tastefully decorated and the bed was comfy. Had a lovely view from our window too. There's a coop, Italian and some local pubs for food too.

The bathroom window had a lock missing which left 3 holes and a draft although wasn't too bad during our stay could be cold and drafty in winter The message/directions from the owners was a little abrupt and the links didn't work I'm sure they have had visitors calling at their neighbours in the past but the property is actually easy to locate and if what3words were provided it would avoid any confusion in the future. Very beautiful location. Charlotte our host was so lovely and welcoming. 10 minute walk to restaurants, so no need to drive. Beautiful country side.

Charlotte was an engaging hostess - we had a nice chat. Everything was perfect inside. Outside: Sequoia trees amazing and garden fairy lights beautiful after dark. 10/10.

Kilmichael House is an enigma. Good location (ten minute walk into centre of the village), beautiful historic house, and one of the biggest rooms with the loveliest beds I had slept in on two weeks worth of Highlands through-walking (inc Great Glen Way). But...

...As plenty of other reviews have noted, the 'hospitality' side of the accommodation is difficult to assess kindly. I booked via Booking.com, and only received a text telling me that check-in was 'before 7pm or you're locked out' at 6.45pm on day of arrival. 15 minutes to get to the accommodation... on a bus that was running over an hour late. As it was, the host let me in, but the stress added by the check-in time got the stay off to a frustrating start (and totally unnecessary - if the information had been sent 24 or 48 hours beforehand, as with most accommodation providers, the desperate rush to check in would not have happened). Secondly, the accommodation is governed by (literally) pages of rules and regulations. The host is, of course, entitled to set whatever parameters she wishes for those who stay in her guest house, but most of us are not lawyers with the time or inclination to read every clause of small print (which are not easy to find on Booking.com), and – again – it doesn't set the most welcoming mood. Thirdly, the wi-fi. As with so much at the property, the provision of wi-fi is unnecessarily complex; in theory it is available – even though the small print suggests people staying should switch off and enjoy life without it (maybe, but not all of us are travelling for leisure reasons). The problem is that, unlike in 99% of other guesthouses, there are no wifi access details to be found anywhere. I looked in all public areas, and tried both texting and ringing the internal bell the host, and was met with a wall of silence. Finally, no milk is supplied alongside the tea and coffee, which cannot be easily remedied because one of the many rules is that no food or drink can be bought into the rooms. So for the 99% of people who take milk with their morning tea/coffee, you either have to break the rules or go without. It is all really frustrating as, as noted above, there is lots to like about the accommodation.
