My wife and I had a 4-night, Monday to Friday stay in mid-September. The property is spread over 3 floors and is light, airy and spacious – it is well equipped with good quality fixtures and fittings. We only ate there for breakfast of cereal and hot drinks as we were out for the rest of the day, however, the kitchen appears to be well equipped with crockery and cutlery, although some of the cereal bowls were chipped. Surprisingly, there was no roll of paper kitchen towel on the dispenser (nor in any of the cupboards), a cheap but essential commodity for a self-catering property. The online, downloadable guide provided by Host & Stay was very useful. We chose the bedroom on the bottom floor because the shower cubicle in the en-suite was larger (though not spacious) than in the other double room on the middle floor. So, 2 flights of stairs to get to the lounge and kitchen area on the top floor. In the bedroom, the duvet just covers the top of the bed, so with 2 people sleeping underneath it, it's not big enough for comfort. From the top floor, there is a nice sea view from the side windows. The property is in a good location and not overlooked; the area was quiet while we were there. It was a reasonable walk to the various ‘attractions’ of Whitby, either down the very narrow Cliff Street or along Khyber Pass (main road) to the jetty end of Pier Road. We walked up to the Abbey (including the 199 steps) and, going ‘inland’, to the Whitby Museum – both are well worth a visit – and many places in between. Not bad for a couple in their late seventies. We enjoyed our stay at 1 The Mount and Whitby in general, however, there were some niggles.

The “on-site parking” was a deciding factor for us in choosing 1 The Mount. Arriving after a long drive it was not clear where the parking was. After driving up the very narrow Cliff Street and turning left onto Khyber Pass it’s only about 10 yards to the turn to the property, a short road with double yellow lines and on-road parking for Permit Holders, so hardly time to locate a parking space. There is a sign but difficult to see from the road - it's so faded it’s impossible to read unless standing right in front of it (photo). Compare that with the 2 clear signs for the adjacent Maintenance parking. All it needs is a photo in the listing of the parking space, including the end of the building. The Maintenance parking has an EV charger connected to 1 The Mount. We have a plug-in hybrid car, so we asked if we could use it on our last night and offered to pay for the electricity used – we know how many units it takes to charge from discharged to fully charged. Unfortunately, we were told it wasn’t available for guest use. We turned on the TV and got an error screen saying “Aerial Cable: No Signal” (photo) - an aerial cable was plugged into the TV and the wall socket. We used iPlayer etc. Next morning, the same error screen but there was no internet connection for iPlayer. The TV’s diagnostic facility showed a Wi-Fi connection to the router, but no connection from router to the internet. Pressing the router's Reset button sorted out the TV, phone and tablet connections. Access to basic terrestrial channels would be good. Limited hanging space in the bedrooms and very little drawer space – a small drawer in each of the bedside tables and 2 small drawers in the dressing table - so we had to keep some things in suitcases. The room with the single beds has a chest of drawers - similar units in the other 2 bedrooms would be a major improvement. Overall, a nice place to stay in a good location that could be so much better if the niggles were dealt...

The location was amazing just cut down Pier Lane straight to the centre its 5 mins. The accommodation was stunning and parking was a real bonus.

The inspection lady on arrival told us to move our car from the parking space in an extremely rude manner.- we arrived at 3pm and check in was 4pm. We'd asked the cleaning staff who were lovely and they said it was ok to park there. The lady said she was carrying out inspections. She was abrupt and rude and it was totally unnecessary. She could of explained that she needed the parking space herself in a nice way. The only other issues were so many scuffs and marks on walls it ruined how lovely the accommodation was.

The basement bedroom smelt of damp and the bedding was also damp. There were black mould spots in the shower. I opened the window for ventilation.
