Wambuliga Homestay was a stopover to my next destination. The two nights I spent here were very welcoming. The family took me to the fish market (to buy our dinner), and sat in the dining room with the family for breakfast and supper. Mama is an excellent cook - but there was so much food ! My room had an air conditioner which was well appreciated, it was clean, and the bed was comfortable. The Homestay is across from a most beautiful beach - and when the sun goes down ... Wow ! PapaSari also has a dive center - he took me snorkeling very close by - it's beautiful. Check out his website.

Maybe there were a couple of spiders and little ants in the bathroom - i think its par for the course - nonetheless I recommend just rinsing it down. It was not dirty, just nature running around!

Superb location opposite Wambuliga reef and only 5min by scooter to Sombu Dive centre. Worth hiring a scooter to get into town on occasion. The family were friendly and welcoming. They helped us to rent scooters and snorkelling gear. They also picked us up from the ferry and dropped us off at end of our stay (there is a cost involved with this).

If you like to sleep in, this may not be the guest house for you. Breakfast is served from 6:30-7:00am sharp and everyone is up and about at this time getting ready for work or school. (Though we found the family accomodating if we asked to pack up our breakfast to eat later). Conservative clothing is valued in this guest house.

Best location right across the road from beach with fabulous reef a quick swim away. The house is immaculately looked after and very clean. Hosts are happy to help with anything and nothing a problem. Breakfast was varied and delicious, so nice not to have rice for a change. We rented their son’s motorbike for our stay. If you like music then you will be welcomed to join the family for a jam any time!

You need to be prepared for squat toilet but you get used to it and it’s clean.

I booked because it was the closest to wambulinga beach where you can enjoy the best snorkeling on the island. Unfortunately the upside stops here.

I cannot confirm the high ratings of this homestay. On booking there are photoes that show a big dining room, but it's another property nearby (closed during my visit). The homestay doesn't provide food except for a very basic breakfast(roti and tea). The closest place where you can have lunch is 30 minutes away by walking. The toilet (not shown in pics), is flat, has no windows nor any kind of ventilation, so the room smells a bit damp. On my arrive, there was not water running in the toilet, only the stagnant one in the bucket used to flush. When I contacted the owner about this, he told he'd be back soon, which he did. Unfortunately though the problem was not solved until late, and even then the water pressure from the shower was so low that it was practically unusable. Oddly though the water in the rest of the property seemed to run smoothly.. which I noticed because the shower in the garden was working. I ended up showering there. The room is very small, and it faces the main street, so you hear the motorbikes running in the night... Even using ear plugs. The curtains don't screen from the sunlight so you wake up at 6.00. it doesn't make for a good sleep. But the worse part is the miscommunication. The day I arrived I made it clear I would have needed a lift to the airport the next morning. I know they speak very little english and use Google translate to read the messages, but I honestly thought they got this. Come morning, the whole family except kids leave to bring their son to the port (as far as I understood he was going to kendari). I assumed someone was going to be back in time to bring me to the airport... But no one came. I texted the owner telling him it was time for me to go the airport and he replied "ok thank you goodbye, see you again!🙏🏻". He didn't even understand I was expecting him to bring me or book the ride for me.
