The Chedi Hegra, AlUla

Of course — I’ve adjusted the sequence so the stargazing comes first, followed the next day by the cycling tour, then breakfast. Simply exceptional — hospitality at its finest The Chedi Hegra was such a rare and unexpected experience that we extended our stay by another night. The hospitality started before arrival. While driving from Riyadh to AlUla, Olaa, a proud Saudi from the AlUla region, contacted me to confirm our arrival time. Later, when we were delayed, Yasser called to check on us and make sure everything was okay. That small gesture said a lot about the level of care here. On arrival, Mutlaq picked us up from the shaded parking area, while Yasser made the check-in completely seamless. I had booked a room but was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to a beautiful suite. The hotel itself is extraordinary—beautifully restored historic structures, including the old Hejaz Railway station, transformed into a luxury hotel while preserving their history and character. That evening, Mutlaq gave us a stargazing session. The almost-full moon unfortunately hid many of the stars, but he turned it into a fascinating discussion about astronomy and the ancient knowledge of the stars. His knowledge genuinely impressed me. The next morning, we enjoyed a complimentary private cycling tour in Hegra. Amm (I hope I’m spelling his nickname correctly!) was incredibly kind, knowledgeable and accommodating. Despite having visited Hegra before, he showed us places and details I had never seen. After the cycling tour, we enjoyed an excellent breakfast, included in our package. Instead of the usual hotel buffet, we could choose whatever we wanted from the menu, freshly prepared. While we were eating, Olaa personally came to welcome us and brought our refreshed room keys before we even realized they needed renewing. Our dinner was excellent too, and the chef personally came out afterward to explain the restaurant’s concept.

It was more than perfect!

The service rivals that of European hotels; if all hotels in the Kingdom followed the example set by The Chedi, there would be no need to travel abroad for luxury, as every comfort and amenity is available right here.

An exceptional stay and the highlight of my first visit to Saudi Arabia. The team made my birthday incredibly special with thoughtful surprises, a room upgrade and outstanding service throughout. Every member of staff remembered my name, the breakfast was excellent, the spa treatment was one of the best I’ve had, and the experiences were beautifully organised. They even created a personalised itinerary, helped with transport, prepared a packed lunch for my excursion and arranged a wonderful evening by the fire pit. Although still in its soft opening, the service was already world-class. I can’t wait to return later this year.
