Towards the beach there is a nature reserve, which is a beautiful walk or bike ride into the town of Monte Gordo, and is a favourite of birdwatchers. The sports facilities in Vila Real Santo António are regularly used by training athletes throughout the year.

Athletics and Sport: Close to the villa is the IAAF accredited sports complex of Vila Real de S. António. The complex is equipped with modern facilities that attract top athletes to this region. Monte Gordo is an established holiday resort with a flat blue flag beach, stretching over 20km. This is ideal for warm weather training sessions. There are over 12km of off road tracks that can be found in the pine forests that lie between Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo

Ria Formosa Natural Reserve: The vast beaches and isles from Faro to Tavira form a natural barrier to the Ocean. Behind are the vast expanses of dunes and after those a labyrinth of lagoons and small sand isles, mud flats and canals. At low tide other salty habitats are uncovered, because the sea penetrates right up to land, forming marches and salt marshes.

With such physical diversity, it is not surprising that the Formosa Estuary attracts such a variety of life forms and provides a wintering ground for many migratory birds. It is one of the most important nature reserves in the network of wetlands that links Europe and sub-Saharan Africa and is very popular with wildlife watchers from all over the world.
