The Space:
There is a 30 Day Minimum Rental is Required for this property. Hale Kohola, “The House of the Whale” is situated on 3 acres in an ideal location on the Kohala Coast, with panoramic views of the ocean and coastline. The master bedroom has a stunning ocean view that you can enjoy by just lifting your head off the pillow. If you are looking for a clean, quiet, spacious place to relax with friends or family, or a home base for day trips or ocean activities at nearby Kawaihae and area beaches, this is the one.
Furthermore, the home is now solar powered and includes an A/C unit in the living room.
This 3 bedroom / 3 bath home sleeps six, including the “ohana” studio with futon sofa-bed, which is connected by walkway to the main house (perfect for a family member who craves their own space). The open floor plan allows privacy for the bedrooms, which are separated by the living areas.
The well-equipped kitchen is well planned for socializing and looking at the ocean while you prepare meals. Enjoy your morning coffee or watch the sun go down from the wrap-around lanai. The elusive “green flash” at sunset has been seen countless times from here. The dark night sky is incredible for gazing at the stars and planets. The quiet neighborhood is a perfect place for a morning jog or walk. There’s even a ukulele to play.
Hale Kohola is a rare find for privacy, beauty, natural quiet and Island Living. Guests are welcome to pick limes, tangerines or bananas on the property, (in season) and enjoy the fragrant plumeria and Tahitian gardenias. The landscaping focuses on species native to Hawaii, including a few endangered species.
During humpback whale season (November thru April) the spouts and breaches of these massive animals are visible from the house. The owners make their home in a small town in Alaska, spending part of the winter on the Big Island enjoying the local foods, culture and ocean and doing whale and dolphin research with the non-profit Hawai'i Marine Mammal Consortium.
Fully equipped; comfortable and clean, you will find Hale Kohola to be the perfect retreat for your dream vacation in Hawaii.

The Neighborhood:
Puako is still the only ocean front residential community along the Gold Coast/Kohala Coast of the Big Island nestled between the Mauna Lani Resort, Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea/Hapuna Resorts. Hapuna Beach State Park has earned the reputation of being one of Hawaii Island's finest beaches. It is the largest White Sands Beach on The Big Island and consistently rates on Top Ten lists internationally. Hapuna Beach offers some wonderful opportunities for swimming, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, sunbathing and snorkeling and is just a mile from Puako. You can even drive the back road to Hapuna Beach and not get on the Highway. Local shore fisherman can be seen daily enjoying the great reef fishing. Puako Beach Drive has no through access which keeps it virtually still undiscovered by many.
There are six separate "beach" accesses along this stretch of beach. Although there is not a tremendous amount of sand, there are tide pools and the extensive protected reef is remarkable. During low tide, small pools dot the entire coastline and these pools are filled with small sea life that make excellent areas to explore for all ages. If you enjoy shore diving, kayaking and snorkeling you can find a spot along this stretch of shoreline to enter the water. Offshore the reef is home to a wide variety of fish and many days you will see dolphins playing right from the shore. Enjoy the Whales who return each year to mate and give birth in the tropical warm waters during the winter months.
Getting Around:
A car is recommended for getting around the area and enjoying all that Hawaii Island has on offer.

We spent hours on the lanai looking at the view. Great location and more than enough room for the two of us.

Bright and open home, quiet and with good, long-distance views of the ocean and coastline, nice lanai and great sunsets. The fresh limes and tangerines on the surrounding trees were tasty. Good location - short drive to the local town and beaches. A couple of issues, however: advertised (and priced) as a 3 bedroom home but the third bedroom, described as "the Ohana studio" is actually a walled-off laundry room (with a futon in it), located in the garage - it's tiny and complete with unpleasant smells and atmosphere from the concrete floor and the car parked in there. The house was well stocked but overall not very clean. The three acre property is completely overgrown, there is no play area for young kids except for the small gravel areas on either side of the house, and the only walking is on the steep, hilly road around the property, not really suitable for seniors. Overall a nice place in a good location, most suitable for 4 adults, but be aware that the upbeat descriptions of some of the details on the website are a bit misleading.
