Ortelle is a small village in the heart of Salento, the perfect base for exploring the area’s wonders: it is located just a few kilometers from must-see destinations such as Castro, Santa Cesarea Terme, Santa Maria di Leuca, and Lecce. The town center is very picturesque, consisting of one- or two-story buildings at most, but with a widespread presence of “bassi” (low-level rooms) and basements, many of which are carved into the rock. There are numerous points of interest: the Church of San Vito, the Mother Church dedicated to St. George (the patron saint), and the Crypt of Ortelle, among the religious buildings of historical importance. Also worth seeing is the Chapel of Saints Vito and Marina, built over a crypt, where you can admire exquisite murals. Finally,
