For those who prefer, the village inn with its open fires and home cooked fayre is just a couple of yards away. Climb the stairs to the first floor, where you will find a variety of sleeping arrangements. On the first floor is a double bedroom and two single bedrooms; there is a family bathroom on this floor with a gorgeous walk-in double shower. Up to the second floor and you can retreat to the master bedroom, with attractive vaulted ceilings, Velux windows, kingsize bed and en-suite shower room.

With an abundance of walks and cycle routes nearby, there is much to do for the outdoor enthusiast. Situated just 4½ miles from the quaint market town of Thirsk, with its 15th-century church, original cinema, and renowned racecourse. The cobbled market square hosts a twice weekly market and is surrounded by individual shops, traditional inns and tea rooms.

Alf Wight, the well-known vet and author of ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ lived here and the ‘World of James Herriott’ visitor centre gives a fascinating insight into the working life of this famous vet, his subsequent books and TV series. The Old Post Office provides a perfect base from which to explore the wider area too, with the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the west and the North Yorkshire Moors to the east. Places of interest include Sutton Bank and Castle Howard, Fountains Abbey and Aysgarth Falls. Families enjoy hours of fun at Lightwater Valley, the Forbidden Corner and Flamingo Land. The coastal resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are all easily accessible and regular trains run from Thirsk to the ancient walled city of York.
