The Conversation

The Conversation
Conversation circles were very well known in Sicily and frequented by the upper middle class and the nobility.

By nature, the Sicilian is a living mime; everything about him—his gestures, words, and silences—exudes theater. Thus, in places like those, where large groups gathered to chat, casual chatter quickly turned into theatrical conversation; that is, everyone played a character in the eyes of the others. It is not out of the question that Pirandello, precisely from his youthful frequenting of Agrigento’s social circles, drew some inspiration to think of men as puppets.
