Welcome to your wonderful waterfront retreat at the Getaway River House and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life as you arrive at this hidden gem on the York River! Nestled just a stone's throw away from the historic charm of Williamsburg and Yorktown, this serene sanctuary offers the perfect blend of convenience and tranquility. With accommodations for 10, the Getaway is an ideal location for cozy to large families or multi-family vacations.
Step onto your private white sand beach, where you can enjoy swimming, fishing, crabbing, birdwatching, and kayaking or paddleboarding. The warm sand beckons you to unwind and soak up the sun's warm embrace while relaxing with a good book. Immerse yourself in river life and take advantage of the crabbing, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking right at your doorstep. Guests will find beach chairs, a canoe, life jackets, and miscellaneous beach equipment like noodles, rafts, etc. for their use during their stay at the Getaway.
For a day of adventure explore the surrounding area with a trip to historic Yorktown just over the bridge (4 miles), cruise the scenic Colonial Parkway to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown (18.2 miles), spend the day at Busch Gardens (17 miles) or get in a round or 2 of golf at one of the many gorgeous courses the area has to offer!
Whip up delicious meals in the beautiful large renovated full kitchen, equipped with all the essentials including double ovens, refrigerator, ice maker, dishwasher, and microwave. Plenty of room to work and plenty pf cookware and kitchen gadgets including a drip coffee maker and a Keurig, a blender, a griddle, and lots of little extra kitchen gadgets. Enjoy your culinary creations in the dining area, step out onto the sun porch, or enjoy the outdoor table and glider all offering picturesque views of the river for an alfresco dining experience you won’t soon forget. If you’re looking to grill out a charcoal grill is available too. We include some basic staples to get you started including some paper products, some dish soap, and of course fresh linens for the beds and bath towels.
Traditionally available for weekly rentals, we also offer flexible arrangements for weekend getaways or split-week stays, perfect for accommodating your family or friends visiting from out of town. The Getaway is a large free-standing home on about an acre lot. Originally built in 1950, so it is not brand new and has some interesting quirks and some transitions between rooms with a small step. The primary bedroom does have a private bath and walk-in shower and a jetted double tub, but both have steps to access them. We have a couple of caretakers who live nearby to take care of the grass and provide assistance should any emergency pop up that needs immediate attention. Book your escape today and make memories to last a lifetime.

Very well kept home, very clean. We went prepared with cleaning products, trash bags, tissue paper etc. they had everything there. When placing grocery orders for delivery the drivers went to the next street over so have your phone to help them get back to you have them take 2 rights and they will be at the house. we loved the peace and quiet that the property gave. The space was perfect for all of us. Had everything you need to cook. We took a crockpot and made meals in them as we were right at the beach. The kids loved the beach all day and at night they watched the moon. Neighbors were very friendly and accepting of the people coming in. Very quiet and relaxing!!! We are waiting to book again for next year! About 25 mins to Busch Gardens and about an 1hr and 20 to Virginia Beach. By boat about 1 hr. We totally loved the community beach its very private, we were down there by ourselves. Which is very enjoyable when traveling with kids. My 4 yr and 7 m old grandkids enjoyed it. Did not have to worry about where they are in a crowd of people at a very busy beach. Can't wait til next year!!! We are already counting down our days!!! Very good for the price.
While the home well water may be drinkable , visitors should know it has a strong unpleasant metallic taste and smell. It is also slightly colored in a clear glass, and it had clearly left brown colored residues in the toilets making them look very unclean especially the toilet upstairs.
Home and Kitchen need to be better equipped, an electric kettle is advertised but was not seen anywhere. A basic hair dryer would have also been nice to find in the each of the full bathrooms.
The floor plan advertised in the pictures is misleading because one set of stairs is locked off and can’t be used to leave the room. In order to go downstairs from the bigger room with the futon and from the room with the single bed, you would have to walk through one of the other two rooms to get the stairs, disturbing their privacy.
There are a series of small steps throughout the home between rooms, while a wheelchair might be able to tackle them they are a big tripping hazard for elderly seniors in our group.
As other reviews have mentioned there were ants in the kitchen.
While we did not allow these issues to ruin our stay, they would have been nice to be aware of going into it for future guests/stays
The biggest plus is the view and location.

The home was quiet and nice. Unfortunately, the kitchen Oven did not work or even turn on. It would have been nice if there were dishwasher tabs to run the dishwasher.

We mainly picked this property for the location, and we were mostly happy with that aspect of the stay. The property was convenient to Williamsburg and Busch Gardens while still being on the water. But there were neighboring properties very close by (literally sharing the lot), and while the neighbors were friendly, we didn't expect to be interacting with anyone. The house itself was quirky. The layout of the upstairs isn't ideal because you had to go through one of the bedrooms to access 2 other rooms, and our teens were not happy about that. There were also small steps up and down to all the rooms on the main floor, which we tripped on several times. And none of us were used to well water. Although we used the provided water cooler to drink, the smell of the well water made showering unpleasant, and we cooked with it at one point and the pasta was nearly inedible. And our friends complained that the upstairs bedroom with the queen bed, the mattress was very firm and uncomfortable, and the blinds would not close all the way so the sun woke them up early each day.These were all minor issues and some of us were more willing to overlook them than others, but my group would not choose to rent this property again if we were looking in the area.
