Port William, known as the ‘Machars of Galloway’, has been presented with the ‘Pride of Galloway’ award and the cottage boasts exceptional views over Luce Bay to the Mull of Galloway and the Isle of Man.
Situated in the heart of Galloway amidst some of the finest scenery in southern Scotland, Saltlife Cottage is ideally located to explore the breathtaking scenery and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, wilderness and romance. Explore the Galloway Hills with their many hidden lochs, burns and waterfalls, the beautiful Solway coastline with sandy beaches, rocky coves and picturesque villages.
Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the largest local reserve in the UK. It has internationally recognised significant numbers of pink-footed geese, greylag geese, many species of duck and wading birds visiting in autumn and winter. Visit the Interpretation Centre where you can view by video camera the Galloway ospreys during their nesting season (April to August), or the local wetlands for the rest of the year.
Take a look at the distillery at Bladnoch, established in 1814 which offers a large shop and guided tours, or meander around Wigtown appreciating the gift shops, small gallery, plant nursery, numerous book shops and many cafés.
The Southern Scotland regions boast an exceptional number of absorbing activities, whatever you’re after from spending a quiet afternoon with a rod and reel beside one of the area’s many excellent rivers, or pushing yourself to the limit along a challenging 7 Stanes cycle track. Horse riding, golf, sailing, diving and numerous walks are available in the area and with its famously mild climate and the balmy influence of the Gulf Stream, Galloway is home to some of the most beautiful and exotic gardens. We had a lovely time at Saltlife. As pensioners it was quiet which is what we like and the views are excellent. I've given average for local amenities but we knew it was a quiet village with no pub.There are a couple of problems in the cottage which need rectifying. There is a problem with the middle velux window. It is very draughty when it's windy and when combined with rain it drips inside. It looks as though it's sprained as you can see it doesn't shut properly.It also looks like there is a problem with damp on the end wall of the cottage as it is causing paint to flake of in the kitchen, sitting room and twin room. I also agree with other comments about the huge table in the kitchen. A smaller adjustable/extendable one would be much better with probably 4 chairs and 2 foldable ones to give more room.Although I've made these comments it wouldn't put me of going again. The cottage and the views are lovely and Port William and surrounding areas are perfect for us.
