Staying for a graduation? Helpful information below:
Visiting Fort Benning
Fort Benning is a large Army installation, and visiting for ceremonies can feel overwhelming. This quick guide covers what families most often need to know.
Ceremonies You May Attend
Turning Green
Marks the end of Basic Training. Short, formal ceremony. Photos are usually allowed after. Liberty is often limited.
Turning Blue
Marks completion of OSUT / advanced training. More relaxed than Turning Green, with more time together afterward.
Graduation
Formal ceremony, often held on Sand Hill. Seating fills quickly—arrive early. Best photos are after formations break.
Getting on Base
• Bring a REAL ID or passport
• Your name must be on your soldier’s access list
• Vehicles may be searched
• Obey speed limits strictly
• Arrive 45–60 minutes early
Most ceremonies take place on Sand Hill.
What to Wear & Bring
• Business casual or neat casual
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Hats & sunglasses recommended
• Weather can change quickly
• Bring a small blanket or towel — benches are often metal or concrete and may be wet from dew or rain.
Time With Your Soldier
Liberty depends on the unit and training phase. Follow your soldier’s instructions closely—curfews are strict. Keep plans simple and flexible.
Photos
• Sit near aisles if possible
• Photos are best after formations break
• Be patient—military timing can vary
A Note for Families
These visits can be emotional. Your soldier may be proud, quiet, or exhausted—this is completely normal. Your presence matters most.

Our home is located in a quiet residential neighborhood, ideal for resting after long days on post. If you need gate tips, timing advice, or dining recommendations, please reach out—we’re happy to help.
