The Space:

Step into centuries of history at this magnificent Grade II listed former rectory in Poughill. With origins dating back to the 16th century, St Michael’s House is a grand and characterful country retreat, offering generous accommodation for up to 11 guests across six bedrooms - perfect for family gatherings and group escapes.

At the heart of the house is the spacious country kitchen diner, where an extendable table comfortably seats the whole group. A large range cooker, dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine and blender provide all the modern conveniences, while a wood burner creates a wonderfully cosy atmosphere on winter evenings. Families can also make use of the high chair.

Elsewhere downstairs, multiple living areas offer plenty of room to spread out and relax, with a smart TV and light-filled conservatory overlooking the grounds.

Four bedrooms occupy the first floor, comprising two king rooms, a twin and a single with a cot. One king benefits from an ensuite bathroom, while the remaining rooms share a family bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. Two further twin bedrooms are located on the second floor, alongside a third bathroom. There is also a single futon in this room that is best suited to children. This can be made up by request only.

Period character runs throughout the house, including its distinctive Gothic windows, which are noted in Nikolaus Pevsner’s The Buildings of England. The property also shares a long history with neighbouring St Michael’s Church, with records of a rectory here dating back to at least 1602.

Outside, just under two acres of gardens provide wonderful space to enjoy country life. The large, level lawn is ideal for games, with croquet and badminton sets provided, while a spacious patio features a large dining set, BBQ and fire pit for memorable evenings outdoors.

With abundant space, fascinating heritage, beautiful grounds and ample driveway parking, St Michael’s House offers an impressive setting for bringing everyone together.

Guest Access:

Guests have access to the whole house and garden.

The Neighborhood:

This home in Poughill is a wonderful choice for experiencing rural Devon, surrounded by peaceful countryside while remaining within easy reach of cities, coastlines and two spectacular National Parks.

Families are particularly well catered for, with a children’s play area in the village, located in the next field to the house - great for letting little ones burn off some energy close to home.

For a great local meal, head to The Ring of Bells in Cheriton Fitzpaine, just a short distance away. This welcoming country pub is known for its excellent food and makes a lovely destination for lunch, dinner or drinks after a day exploring.

Poughill’s central Devon location means you’re roughly equidistant from both the north and south coasts. Head south for traditional seaside towns, beaches and the beautiful Exe Estuary, or travel north towards North Devon’s dramatic coastline and expansive sandy beaches.

The historic city of Exeter is around 25 minutes away, offering an impressive cathedral, independent shops, restaurants and the atmospheric Quayside. It’s an excellent option for shopping, sightseeing or a rainy-day excursion.

Outdoor enthusiasts have two incredible landscapes within easy reach. Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks are both around 40 minutes by car, opening up endless opportunities for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting. Explore Dartmoor’s granite tors and wooded valleys or discover Exmoor’s rolling moorland, picturesque villages and spectacular views.

Closer to home, the surrounding Mid Devon countryside is criss-crossed with footpaths, quiet lanes and pretty villages, making it perfect for leisurely walks and cycling. You can also visit nearby Crediton for shops, cafés and local produce.

Whether you’re planning countryside walks, family adventures, pub lunches or days beside the sea, Poughill provides a peaceful and exceptionally well-positioned base for discovering Devon.
