A Friendly Safety Guide to Blue Ridge

Part of the charm of mountain living is sharing the space with local wildlife, including bears and other curious critters! They have excellent senses of smell and are naturally drawn to food. To help keep them wild and avoid any unwanted close encounters, please make sure no leftover food is left outside (including on decks or grills). We also ask that you securely tie all trash bags and keep them inside the provided trash cans. Thanks for helping us coexist peacefully with our wild neighbors!

To help you make the most of your Blue Ridge visit safely, please keep these year-round mountain tips in mind:

Weather Wise: Mountain weather is unpredictable! Check forecasts daily, as conditions (sun, rain, thunderstorms, fog, snow/ice) can change quickly. Dress in layers for comfort.
Wildlife Encounters: Enjoy viewing wildlife like bears, deer, and turkeys from afar. Crucially, never feed any wild animals. Secure all food and trash indoors or in bear-proof bins to keep bears wild and everyone safe.

Trail Smarts: Be alert for snakes and use tick repellent when hiking (especially spring through fall).

Mountain Roads & Service: Drive carefully on winding/steep roads. Be aware that cell service/GPS can be unreliable in some spots. Please note: The road has uneven terrain in some areas. We recommend using the the best side of the road with better traction and make sure you drive safely with a steady speed to avoid wheels spinning.
