THE HOUSE
Designed by a renowned Costa Rican architect, Bosque de Mar was built around the forest, not in place of it. Walls of handcrafted wood lattice slide open so the living room becomes part of the trees, and the whole house is oriented to catch the breeze. Natural cross-ventilation keeps the rooms cool, so the air conditioning is there when you want it, not all the time. One bedroom even sits beneath a cortés amarillo tree that was saved by redesigning the house around it.
Inside you'll find warm wood ceilings, original art, handmade tile and vintage finds in every room. The open-air living and dining area flows onto the deck, with rocking chairs and a daybed facing the forest, a dining table for the whole group and a fully equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar.
THE BEDROOMS (5 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms: 2 king, 2 queen and 5 single beds)
- Canopy Suite: king bed up among the treetops, private balcony with outdoor shower, double vanity and a rain shower with a porthole window to the forest.
- Family Garden Suite: king bed plus a trundle daybed with two singles that join into a queen. Private bathroom and garden terrace. Ideal for families with kids.
- Pool Garden Room: queen bed, private bathroom and a small terrace out to the gardens and pool.
- Forest Studio: queen bed, a desk facing the forest for work and calls, 65-inch TV with soundbar and subwoofer, private bathroom.
- Cortés Amarillo Wing: connected to the house but with its own private entrance and kitchenette (cooktop, sink, mini fridge). Large single bed (100 x 190 cm) plus a pull-out bed with two singles; sleeps 3. Private bathroom with rain shower. THE AREA
Playa Junquillal is a 150-meter walk from the house: a long, quiet beach with sunsets over the Pacific. It is a protected sea turtle nesting beach. The red, turtle-safe lights you'll see at night keep it dark for nesting turtles, and the local Verdiazul foundation runs a hatchery and volunteer program, including hatchling releases visitors can join in season.
Playa Blanca, with shade trees, turquoise water and tide pools, is a lovely morning or evening walk, or a short drive. The nearby mangrove estuaries are perfect for kayaking.
Surfers are in the right place: Junquillal has its own waves, and some of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Negra and Playa Avellanas, are a short drive away.
Junquillal still feels untouched: no high-rises, no crowds, just forest, beach and wildlife, with everything you need to rest comfortably at home.
