Such fun staying in this castle which was clean and luxurious. Recommended for those with a hire car although proximity to Railway is good too. Loved the gardens and walks in the woods. Excellent breakfast to set us up for a day of sightseeing in Edinburgh and surrounds.

Authentic castle estate ambience. Guests can freely roam the expansive gardens and the stately public rooms—including sitting in the library with a whisky from the on-site bar.
Despite the historical rooms, the bathrooms are up to date and up to code.
Very quiet surroundings, yet geographically close to Edinburgh if you are traveling by car.
Solid on-site restaurant and bar. There is a breakfast buffet available, but we ordered from the à la carte menu, which was very good.
Most rooms are accessible via a lift.
It does have ok WiFi for a castle.
The smaller rooms feel a bit cramped... because they are the historical servant or governess quarters, the authenticity is spot on, but it leaves very little usable floor space. Compared to the shoebox-equivalent rooms in and around the Isle of Skye, this is still royal.
The property trades modern amenities (no pool, spa, etc.) entirely for historical authenticity.
An electrical humming was audible in the "Mary - Queen of Scotts" suite.

A beautifully restored Manor house with beautiful rooms, elegant, common spaces, superb food, and incredible staff.. Very special thanks to David for his hospitality. Beautiful view of the water and town from their patio and a bar. Five stars in every way.

The common areas were lovely, furnished with antique furniture. The property overall was charming, and the gardens were vast and beautiful.
The room we were given on the first night was very small and not particularly clean, with insects present because the window had apparently been left open. The spring mattress was old and uncomfortable, and kept sliding off the base. The hairdryer was stored on the floor of the closet. The next morning we noticed a stain, likely mold, under the mattress, and asked to change rooms. The new room was slightly bigger and had clean sheets, but it still wasn't well maintained — for example, the hairdryer was partly melted. Overall, the rooms don't live up to a 4-star standard or the price paid.
