The Super 8 Hotel (900 m/13 mins’ walk north-east of the city centre) is situated on the outskirts of the quarter of Čair. Check-out is between 10.30 a.m. and 11.00 a.m. Of course, I needed to leave the hotel earlier than the stated time, so they’ll happily check you out earlier too. I was supposed to be staying in a single room with a private bathroom featuring a shower cubicle. After the room change, which I’ll describe below, I ended up in a twin room, though it was the same size. Both rooms overlooked a building under construction behind the hotel. The room facilities included air conditioning, an electric kettle, tea, coffee and slippers. The bathroom was equipped with complimentary toiletries and a hairdryer. A continental breakfast was served buffet-style. After a tiring journey to Skopje, all I wanted was a hot shower and a comfortable bed. In the shower, I realised that the water wasn’t spraying from the showerhead, but simply trickling out. And as for hot – or even just warm – water, I could only dream of it. So I went down to reception and asked the receptionist to have it fixed. The receptionist insisted that we would definitely sort out the problem and offered me a second room. The shower was spraying, the washbasin was running, and the toilet was flushing but not leaking.

The room facilities included a television with cable and satellite channels (though I’ll never know for sure, as the TV didn’t work). I also couldn’t find a socket by the bed. The housekeeper didn’t visit my room at all during my stay.

Friendly staff. The hotel is ideally located, close to the Old Town, the bazaar, and the city centre. The room was spacious, and the bed had a very comfortable mattress. Excellent breakfast with both local and international specialities, offering a good selection of savoury and sweet options.

The staff is sometimes absent from the reception desk, and you have to look for them upstairs.

The breakfast was exceptional and delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

The decor is quite dated and the bath didn’t work in my bedroom.
