Sewage smell and unexpected charges ruined our stay.
The property is situated in a quiet, peaceful area. The house is bright and spacious, with plenty of room for ten guests. It features a generous living room with a professional sound system and is well equipped with a good range of household appliances. There is also ample parking at the front of the property.
Unfortunately, several issues affected our stay.
The most unpleasant was a persistent, overpowering smell of sewage throughout the house. We initially tried pouring water into the drains, hoping this would solve the problem, but it made no difference. When we informed the owner, he told us the smell came from the town’s sewer system and that nothing could be done.
Although the house had a good range of appliances, they were old, and preparing meals or even heating food in the microwave took an unusually long time. The pool water was cold, and the sauna switched on but did not heat up, making it impossible to use. This was particularly disappointing, as the sauna was one of the reasons we had chosen the property.
The cleaning also left much to be desired. One shower drain was blocked, and the bathroom mats had not been properly cleaned. A sliding kitchen door was already broken when we arrived. Fortunately, we noticed it immediately; given our later experience with the deposit, we were concerned that we might otherwise have been held responsible for the damage. The security cameras were also not working.
Our greatest concern, however, was the handling of additional charges and the €400 security deposit. We had booked the entire house, advertised as accommodating ten guests. Our initial reservation listed five people, while three additional guests joined us two days later and stayed for only two nights. Our understanding of the Booking.com listing was that the rate applied to the whole property.
The owner nevertheless demanded an additional €500. After considerable discussion, he agreed to reduce this to €350. We felt pressured to pay an unexpected charge that we considered unjustified. Being visitors in a foreign country, we felt we had little choice at the time. When we said we would raise the matter with Booking.com, he told us to go ahead, claiming that he could delete our review anyway.
There was further pressure concerning the rubbish.
