Unfortunately the kitchen equipment in the flat was very old - we were told on numerous occasions the fridge freezer was 18yrs old. The dial itself to set the temperature was worn and you had to use a spoon to turn up the temperature.
When the freezer finally packed up and frosted over I scraped off the ice from the front of the drawers so that the door could close then turned the freezer off. That night my son stayed up late in the living room adjacent to the kitchen. I and my daughter retired early .
The next morning I reported the freezer issue to the owners/managers.
That day he was feeling nauseous and had a headache. When we opened the fridge there was a noxious smell coming from the freezer and it seems like the freezer was emitting refrigerant it was very pungent.
That whole day he was feeling ill and with headaches.
On check out the manage blamed me for the issue . He said that I had scraped the interior of the freezer causing gases to be released - I told him I only scraped the front of the drawers to enable the door to close. He told a video of the interior of the 18yrs old freezer and said that is evidence that I caused the damage. A previous text from the lady who did the orientation wrote that “the freeze had failed due to the heatwave”.
There was no apology from the manage with respect to the headaches / nausea / fatigue caused by leaking refrigerant instead a blame game by showing me the inside of an 18 yr old freezer saying I had damage it.
Appalling lack of human empathy.
We were then essentially thrown out of the apartment with a threat of “calling the authorities”
I expect my full €300 deposit to be returned and also further compensation the harm caused to my son who lost a days holiday due to sickness. If not I will have to take this small claims court.
