The Tromso Hostel

I stayed at The Tromsø Hostel and the experience turned out to be a mix of challenges and kindness. I reached well ahead of check‑in time and asked the reception for guidance on the best fjords to visit in the region. They were helpful and pointed me toward some fantastic spots. When I returned later in the evening, I was allotted a bed in the attic — three floors up. For a motorcycle traveller carrying luggage, this was tough. The space was cramped, and I even hit my head while trying to look at the bed. I explained that I wouldn’t be able to sleep there or haul my gear up and down three floors. After some back‑and‑forth, the staff were kind enough to re‑allot me a ground‑floor bed, and the rest of the night was peaceful. The team — mostly young, Spanish‑speaking folks — were warm and friendly, and they treated me well despite the initial confusion. Overall, The Tromsø Hostel has kind people and a good vibe, but be mindful of room assignments if you’re traveling with heavy luggage

Central location. Kitchen was sufficiently equipped for what I needed and with good instructions. Nice paintings on the walls. Room was correct, I thought it would be a bit cold but it was not in the end. People were respectful. There was noise from the street but this we can do nothing about. Whatsapp group for community exchange and activities is a great idea, I appreciated.

I would have liked to have free access to a place were to store sensitive documents or valuables, specially as the room doors were not closed with a key or code. Or information to bring a padlock if I wanted to (maybe the info was shared and I missed it).

The location is great for a city trip, you can definitely walk to all sightseeing things and tours. I stayed in room 11 which was only 4 bed even though I booked 5 bed which was great! A lot of space!

All other rooms except room 11 seemed very small. The bathroom is ok, the shower on the top floor was horrible, you couldn’t close the glass door… also nothing for tall people. Also, the staff seemed very uninterested, the hostel wasn’t really clean (not dirty either) but it definitely need some rework (new mattress, renovating the shower, deep clean kitchen, better area to eat, like tables are missing,..). I mean Tromso is expensive but if I would be the owner (and price my dorm at 100€+) I would like to create a nice and cozy home for the youth which book hostels not this mediocre hostel.
