Albergo San Marco

Lovely room, in a great location. Good breakfast. Friendly and helpful staff.

Our room was over the kitchen/dining room

A charming hotel on a small canal just a block off St Marks Square. Very convenient for walking around the main areas of town. Great breakfast although the room could get quite crowded. The hotel arranged a private water taxi and porter for us both arriving and departing. The staff was outstanding both in communication before we arrived and during our stay. Their restaurant recommendations each evening were delicious and enjoyable.

The only thing to be aware of is that while the Albergo San Marco is on a canal, they don’t have a dock, so arrival and departure were at the San Marco docks and we needed to hire a porter to help with our luggage as there’s a bridge to cross to get there. The staff had it arranged and it worked out fine, just added a bit of stress with being unfamiliar to the arrival process. The booking.com listing that says they have transportation available is misleading. We had an issue getting the room cooled off our first day, but was resolved by the front desk staff adjusting the setting on their computer. Some of the room arrangements are a little quirky being an old building but charming overall.

The bathroom was really really small

The location is amazing! You literally walk three steps from the front door, and you are at a bridge to St Marks Square! Within a few hundred feet of the front door, there are tons of restaurants, shops, gelato, and a small bodega in case you need snacks or toiletries. The staff was friendly and the on site restaurant was good.

The front desk offered to book me a water taxi for the morning that we were leaving. They told me the charge would be 110 euros. A water taxi to and from the train station is 70 euros! So they are charging a 40 euro fee to make a phone call. I just walked to the water taxi stand at St. Marks Square and immediately got on a water taxi to the train station for the standard 70 euro fee. I was planning to go to Murano, and the front desk advised that they had a collaboration with a glass factory that would pick us up and take to the tour for free. After spending 6,500 euros at the glass factory, the salesman strongly talked me out of touring the rest of Murano and said they would have their water taxi take us to Burano for lunch. I thought this was a tactic to keep us from seeing what other glass places were charging. I later found similar items to what I had bought for half the price. A Google search revealed reviews stating that this particular glass factory has agreements with various hotels and gives a percentage of the sales as kickbacks to the hotels for sending them their customers. Both of these pactices are predatory to hotel customers. As long as you don't ask the hotel for advice or help booking things, this is a nice place to stay.
